There's trouble once again on the mean streets of River City, but this time the boys are in over their heads! In this all-new entry in the legendary beat-'em-up series, hot-blooded heroes Kunio and Riki have been captured, leaving it to their hard-hitting girlfriends, Kyoko and Misako, to serve up some payback. As you punch and kick your way across town - either solo or with a friend in local co-op - you'll gain new skills, chow down on power-ups, wield an assortment of weapons, and unleash an arsenal of combos, throws, and special attacks that will leave the bad guys crying for mama - all in outrageous 16-bit style! The awesome action is punctuated by manga story panels, anime cutscenes, and an epic synth-pop soundtrack. It’s an old-school rumble for a new generation!
Key Features:
Wild beat-'em-up action for one or two players!
Glorious pixel-art graphics plus anime and manga cutscenes!
This game is a nice and fun beatemup , completely ruined by its controls.
For some reason they decided to bind light attack , open doors, grab items and grab body all to the single. Why?
You fix this by installing UserXpMod and XPadder, but I can't reward this kind of silly oversights with a positive score. This isn't your first videogame, Wayforward. Get it together.
River City Girls runs well enough, has a fantastic presentation, lots of energy, and some really fun movesets in the playable characters. On the other hand, some things feel like it's unnessecarily holding you back rather than genuinely challenging in single player
Double tapping to run made sense in the arcades, but for a 30 USD release it can feel clumsy. While the move upgrades are solid and feels great to fight with, regular enemies have no audio cues. So their attacks can feel like they have no startup at times. Combined with a delayed parry/one way block, and the defensive options for players are lacking.
You have to purchase items to see what they do. It's a cool risk reward, but if you guess wrong it's a grind to get items for the bosses, who feel like they designed with co op in mind. I understand challenging the player with big boss fights, but Cuphead's fights are genuinely shorter. RCG's bosses drag in a way that isn't engaging. It also doesn't help that the stat upgrades can feel like an afterthought.
River City Girls is not a bad game. It's fine, and in co op it's a blast. I just don't think it will revive the genre, or get people into them who aren't fans. A sequel with improvements would get me hype. For now it's worth getting on sale, especially if you use this: https://github.com/MoArtis/RCGMod/releases
River City Girls is a nice fun romp if you held fond memories of the River City Ransom/Kunio-kun series of games. Gratuitous street brawls combined with WayForward's quality graphics, a light-hearted humorous plot, and a fantastic soundtrack make for quite the enjoyable experience. It even experiments a little with a follower system and special-theme battles.
Although if you are considering this game, you might also want think about downloading the UserXpMod (aka RCGMod) which you can find on GitHub, which fixes a number of minor 'Quality of Life' issues that have nagged past players, including: tracking usables, adding missing moves' input display, and so on.
Overall, I found myself satisfied with the game on my own, though the game seems very geared towards a two-player experience. If you can find someone else with similar street-brawling tastes to co-op with, I definitely recommend River City Girls for at least a half-day's worth of beat-'em-up entertainment.
