I wanted to love this game

This new version of Riven is a technical triumph, visually stunning and features a more logical placement of puzzle elements than the orginal 1997 version. The re-imagining of the fire marble domes was the first of several jaw-dropping moments where you realize this is an all new game. The puzzles seem easier than the original but this may just be my familiarity with Cyan's puzzle designs. The story has been updated with some plot points from the novels, digging deeper into D'ni lore than the original game. As a Myst/Riven/Uru fan since 1994, this game really tickled the part of my brain where D'ni lore resides. But . . . The 3D NPCs are so bad and cartoonish that they destroy the imersion of the game. I'm trying not to look at this through nostalgia glasses because '90s PC game video was far from perfect. But with video, even grainy video, the people look like people with real faces conveying real emotion. Like the orignial 1997 version, the vast majority of the game is the player exploring Riven alone. The breif encouters with NPCs are what gives the game its emotinal gravitas. 3D Atrus and Catherine seem less distraught than they should be and 3D Gehn just doesn't seem as evil even thought the game uses the audio of John Keston from the original. There was a creepy moment in the orignal game when a woman in the village opens a view portal, sees you and imediatley slams it shut. When this happened in the new version, the 3D NPC looked so silly I actually laughed. That's not good. I bought this game within an hour or two of its release. I've wanted this game since I first saw realMyst back in 2000. While I'm not completly disapointed with it, the 2024 version of Riven did not live up to my expectations.

    Finally, Riven is beautifull.

Full 1st person look around. Look at and explore all the places and enjoy the possibility to look in all directions. Not everithing is the same, puzzles have been changed and added, so plenty of new stuf to explore. Only minus are the loading times in between areas'. With a fast NVMe SSD a minor issue, but with a slow HDD this could be really annoying.

    Disappointing nostalgia trip

I wanted to love this and I got it on Steam for the VR experience. The VR mode is well-implemented but there are a couple of non-invasive visual glitches. Puzzle games in general aren't a great fit for VR because of the inherent fatigue of wearing the helmet while thinking, but it is very nice to feel like you're there (or at least, more immersed). I tried it then played on a normal screen. I remember not making it very far in the original version as a kid. I assumed the game was long and had many different worlds. I was wrong, it is quite short. There are only about a dozen puzzles really, and the vast majority of them are about observing the world more than logical thinking. For the two last puzzles I knew exactly what to do and where to go to gather the information I needed. In general across all puzzles the time I took to think about a solution was about ten times shorter than the time it took me to execute it. In other words, for modern standards this game really does not respect your time. At all. A feature to teleport to arbtrariy locations you've been before (and haven't been barred from) would have made the game _a lot_ better. But at the same time, that would also have made it significantly shorter. This is so bad that I started timing things out in order to optimize my navigation around the island (figuring out when going through the Starry Expanse is shorter than the maglevs, for example). Some less important points: * The attention to detail to recreate the same environments is bordering on maniacal at times. This is obviously a work of passion. * Unfortunately the animated characters look very, very bad for modern standards and quite jarring compared to the static geometry. It looks like they've used AI to generate 3D models from the original 2D videos (that can't be true but that's how it looks like). Some characters have hats that shake above their heads for some reason.
