Wonderful game, be sure to set FPS to 89

Overall an interesting story, the one gripe I have is that it felt a bit long by the end, but I would not know what to take out. There is a lot crammed into the game, yet it doesn't feel small or overly forced, and everything is there for a reason. There are the usual Piranha Bytes features, most of which are great. A tough rise to power, opposing factions, fully open world neatly compressed with very little wasted space, a ham-fisted approach to romance (endure it for a half hour out of 50, then its gone and you can get back to your game) The failures of such a setup of the game is that you'll need to decide on a playstyle before having experienced it. I expected to be two-handing a greatsword by the end, but by that point my character had learned how to 1-hand such weapons, so sword-and-board it was. Eventually I was basically forced in an entirely different direction by the gear. In the same way, if you follow direction and heed certain warnings, no magic for you. My playstyle choice was only affected for the last few hours though, yours may not be at all. Regardless, there is some definite replayability to it. Because the different choices at the start will make your path through the game clearly very different. The voice acting overall is fairly good, excluding the usual romance-part that Piranha seems dead-set on putting in their games. It's not as a bad as Elex, but mostly since it didn't go anywhere. That may well have been my choices, but I felt no interest in pursuing a person I talked to twice during a 50-hour game. Overall, well worth its price. The visuals are good, though my standard is on artstyle more than fps or realism. There is some jank regarding this, as should be expected of Piranha. One particularly annoying bug I ran into being because it does not work above 90 FPS and will bug out leaving you unable to control anything and force-closing the game being your only solution. Forcing the FPS below 90 will fix that.

I enjoyed it.

This is a game for those patient gamers who don't mind doing heaps of little misc quests and dying over and over again. While I probably made it more challenging by never using a shield and refusing allot of NPC help, this game is quite hard. I thought everything was done pretty well: The combat takes a bit of getting used to but after a bit of practice and a few level ups it's really quite fun. The magic was probably one of my favorite aspects of the game (I regret not being a mage). Many a gorgeous in-game morning I cast a levitation spell from the highest point of the island and gently floated over the beautiful landscapes looking for a new place to explore. The quests can get a bit tedious but they're all quite varied and I enjoyed most of them. By far the biggest drawback for me was the end questline. It looks good on paper but it just didn't seem to work, I got a bigger sense of achievement from finishing some of the side quests than I did for completing the actual game. The only other problem I had was with the nameless hero, he's a bit of a jerk and it didn't really feel right saving the world with him. Overall I'm glad I bought it and I did enjoy it though I'm not sure whether I'll ever play it again.

Game where you can feel like at home!

As a really huge Gothic fan I have to say that this game is really something what Gothic fans was waiting for. Story is quite similar, climate is also great. For me it's just like another Gothic game. Of course a lot of people would say that this game is much worst then the Gothic 1 or 2 but the truth is that Gothic and 2 brings you a nostalgia and this game is something the same with a little differences which are fitable. And please be honest, after Gothic 3, nothing can be worst :). Anyway, I really recomend that game for every Gothic fans and RPG fans in general. Gothic gamelay could be very tough for a lot of you guys, apecially younger gamers but this is also something "special" for these games. I still not finished this one, but I cannot wait to do that and start playing Risen 2. Cheers!

An interesting, and unique RPG

I love this game. The story may not be that different, but the game as a hole feels very unique, which is I think a strength not often warranted enough to it. The premise is that your shipwrecked on an Island, with little to no context as to where you are. After spending some time there and getting familiar with the colorful locals, you slowly rebuild your life. You begin with simple sticks and stones, but eventually as you progress, you become more and more powerful. The standard rpg mechanics have their own strange little twist in Risen, and its great. There is atmosphere, and a great soundtrack. The combat itself, is a bit weak, and takes some getting used to. The game is hard. Really hard. Its best to use some sort of guide when you are first beginning because just about anything can and will kill you. I was hours into the game before I could get any sense of control over combat. The quests too, are a bit vague and sometimes difficult to understand what exactly you need to do. But again, this game is a lot of fun, and definitely recommended for anyone looking for an rpg outside the standard fare

Give it a try

I've get this game about 6 years ago and I can clearly say that it was my first RPG game. So when I first tried it I was shocked: a large, beautiful and alive world, tough enemies and hard way to the top. It was interesting just to walk around and find adventures myself, without taking any quests. So time has passed, after Risen I've completed several other RPGs, including Gothic trilogy from the same developer. And now I can say that it looks more like Gothic remake than original series. The same alive fantasy world, the same tough enemies, the same several different sides of conflict and other Gothic features. That's all, Risen doesn't have anything else to give. The story and characters are dull and not memorable, interesting quests end at the second chapter out of four. The caves are interesting at the beginning when you explore the world, but not when it becomes your main quest. In the end I want to say that Gothic parts of the game are made awesome. The number of game bugs is minimal. The combat system makes you think during the battle, the random clicking doesn't work here like in Gothic 3. The last chapters are only 4-5 hours out of 20, so the game is worth playing.
