for two bucks I can't complain to much. Game plays like the classic RPGs I grew up on like Gothic. The combat challenging and sometimes just ridiculous with the constant blocking but it feels so good once you finally clear whatever was standing in your way. Story made this game really hard to get through. Toward the end it stop feeling enjoyable and you just want the game to end already. Overall if you paid two bucks or something for the game it can be a decent time killer
I played the demo and loved it. I saw the discount on gog and thought lets give it a try. Now I regret my decision even though the game cost me less than 3EUR. You must know I am very biased on the Gothic series. It maybe is the worst action-rpg series in history of gaming (IMO).
When playing Risen you feel how much of Gothic is left. The odd movement, the awful difficult combat, the great and fantastic dialogs and characters. Honest, if this game is only about listening to books of dialog and solving NPCs problems with brain instead of combat, then this game could've been a miracle!
It's true, combat is difficult. A simple boar can kill you in seconds on early levels. But why is the combat difficult? It's because the hostile creatures and humans have no attack pattern. Sometimes they strike only once, sometimes they strike two times and sometimes they strike 3 times. But it is hard to see without proper animation what the hostiles do next. You think that boar will strike only once, but then hits you 3 times and your dead.
Learning the basics of combat in Risen is a prolonged process with lots of frustration. And getting frustrated after 5 minutes because a simple boar humiliated you is no fun. If you're up for the challenge to survive the unpredictable combat of Risen, then this game is for you. If you get frustrated very quickly then avoid this game and its sequel at all costs.
Just finished playing this, and with the exception of the final fight, it's pretty awesome. The environment in which the game is set is massive. I spent 6 days (of 24hrs) playing this.
Modern games may have the gloss and the graphics, but this game reminded me of when games were fun and exciting! Recommended.
I really wanted to enjoy this game, I found it beautiful and it was the first game of its type I had played in a long time. But I found the best part to be running around the town talking to everyone and solving the quests, whenever I ventured out into the world I was horribly bored. The combat especially is horrendous. You can take advantage of it and defeat monsters you shouldn't but mostly get killed by critters because you can't be arsed. There are good games out there - Gothic II, etc. This isn't one of them.
The game itself is great - you can get really sucked into the world, and it gives you this Gothic-like challenge to work your way up from a guy who starts washed up on a beach with no shoes and a branch for a weapon to a monster slayer. The characters are interesting and their acts are believable, and the main plot keeps you engaged.
Some people mention annoying combat - I'd say it's only annoying at first. Your guy moves slow and can get eaten by a stingrat if he makes a mistake, but that's because he's a nobody and has no idea how to fight. As you progress with your combat skills, he starts to move faster and gains access to more moves, that make the combat easier and more fun. To me, it's a plus.
The game is hard, but in a good way - instead of a mastery in clicking your mouse in all the right moments, the challenge is often in using your head to get through traps and blockages waiting for you in ancient temples and knowing when to sneak through your opponents and come back to fight them when you're stronger.
The game has 2 issues: first, it's a bit buggy, but you can live with it if you save often. Sometimes you'll try to jump and your guy will get launched miles into the sky, either dying immediately or getting stuck with the only way out being reloading game. It takes away a bit of immersion, so that's half a star down.
And now the ending - without spoilers, it's just leaves you with huge "That's it?". You don't feel like you really finished the game, and since the sequel is in my opinion unplayable, you're just left hanging for all the eternity.
All in all, it's still one of the best games I've played.
