As with the Gothic games: it's fun but has a hundred tons of bugs. A word of advice: you MUST finish the "Patty wants to leave town" quest BEFORE advancing into chapter (regardless of which faction you join) 2 or else you'll not be able to complete the game: after chapter 1, you won't have the dialogue option with Patty to lead her out of the town, which will prevent you from doing a main story quest in chapter 3.
If you are already in chapter 2 (or 3) and you did not do the Patty wants to leave town quest, you may still be able to recover your playthrough but not without cheating.
Other than that, it's a game worth playing.
This is a good game if you use these rules (no spoilers)
use swords + shields (enemies don't stay away for you to use range weapons, they get close. most enemies can't be blocked without shields)
use nvidia panel to lock the framerate to 60fps otherwise the game will glitch and will behave miserable. (also enhance the anti aliasing in nvidia panel)
get all utility skills as soon as possible (sneaking, lockpicking, crafting) before any weapon skill.
around 5% of quests will have some hard to find objectives (you will know when you get one of those), check a walktrough because, trust me, figuring the solution by luck will not work.
Worth the money thats for sure, its a good RPG that doesn't hold your hand, the combat can take a while of getting used to but it's rewarding when you figure it out because it requires thought instead of button mashing which will get you your ass handed to if you do, you actually start off as a complete joke with nothing but a stick and you'll probably be like 10 hours into the game until you start getting good weapons/armour.
The main story is pretty meh but i find the side quest's to be the most interesting, they're nothing amazing but they're fun and quite varied.
The graphics are gorgeous, the same during a sunset is one of the best sunsets you'll ever see in a video game and when you're strolling through the forest it looks amazing and the atmosphere is even better.
Its a very relaxing and atmospheric RPG, alot of the quest's dont involve any combat at all so you can just sit back and play it with a beer in one hand too.
Its not the most amazing game and its no classic but if you want a cheap RPG to satisfy your RPG thirst then this should be an instabuy, if you don't like RPG's you'll hate this, if you love RPG's you'll love this.
Risen is a really good open world RPG with an interesting. It's really challenging, but makes lot of fun when you realize how you get stronger over time. The combat system is okay, but could be much better. The game world is nicely designed and invites you to explore aside the main path. Graphics are still okay, the game looks quite nice, considering its age. There are still some bugs in the game, so I'd recommend using the latest fan patch (version 1.3).
Unfortunately the game has in may opinion one really big flaw. The first two chapters of the game, which take up about 2/3 of the whole game, are really great. But unfortunately the last two chapters are horrible. Most of the time you have to fight through temples, collecting stuff for the final fight. That eben would be okay, if the fights in this chapter wouldn't be so totally tedious. The main enemies in the 2 last chapters are such a pain in the ass to fight, I really had to force myself to keep playing. That's a real shame, because as I said before, the first 2/3 of the game are realla enjoyable.
Risen is a game which could have been great were it not for its many small shortcomings.
If you've played any of the Gothic games, you'll immediately notice the similarites, like the extensive dialogue system or the way you level up your character. Heck, some of the animations are even still the same. What I was hoping was that Risen carries forth the things Gothic did well, and builds on it.
It does not.
To start with, the combat is godawful. Under no circumstances can you fight multiple enemies, or they'll stagger you to death. It is absolutely necessary to pull each enemy one by one, which makes combat slow and fiddly, since the way enemies aggro on you / "see" you is inconsistent. While fighting with a sword, you'll often rely on combo attacks to get the job done. Unfortunately, some enemies (especially the ones later in the game) love to interrupt your combo and hit you back while they're (theoretically) still staggered. In general, enemies are very fond of interrupting their animations (like stagger, stun, wince, anything you'd see as an opportunity) just to fuck you over.
Then, hitboxes are a mess. Your twohander can't reach a ghoul standing right in front of you, but of course it's scrubbly arms can reach you.
Enemies' attack animations are often too fast to react to. Especially ridiculous when your own options all take an eternity to execute.
Besides combat, dialogue sometimes makes no sense as characters repeat the same line in different variations, or even try to give you quests which you've already completed with another npc.
Also, movement is awkward and sometimes bugs out. Falling is not a thing the game is prepared for, including when you jump; and I've gotten stuck in walls and/or the ground after trying to climb up a ledge by pressing space numerous times.
Overall, the game shows some ambition, but the odds feel skewed in your disfavour, and the plainly obvious lack of polish make it infuriating to play.
