Gothic I rebranded and rebooted

I liked quite a lot. In many regards is comparable to Gothic I. You could say is a reboot but changing the name and the lore and keeping most of the formula. The melee feels a lot like Gothic I/II. Ranged became weak by comparison. Magic is really weak at the start and really powerful by the end and it is quite simple all the way. There 3 dealing damage spells and you are supposed to specialize in one. The rest of the magic spells are small buffs or support magic. Buffs and support spells are available to every one by using consumable scrolls. Music is ok, but forgettable. Is not bad nor annoying music in any way, it just wont give you the chills when you hear the main theme some time after you beat the game. Its, divided in 4 chapters. In the first one you can cover, let's say, 80% of the map and the rest on chapter 2. This unless you are trying to play mage, then you should delay most of the exploration out of cities to chapter 2. Chapter 3 and 4 had few side-quest that couldn't be finished before. This chapters are mostly about dungeon crawling.

I played it many times

.. always in a new faction I haven't played. Flickerings, climbing bugs, too high mouse sensitivity, etc? There are fixes for these problems, like there are for G1/G2/G3. I don't understand these complaints. You can also wait for the official patch that is coming in January. It's not that difficult, you only need to find the teachers teaching strength in the beginning, so you have a chance against others. The quest map is showing you waypoints not like in Gothic 3, so it's easier to navigate. The length of the game is similar to Gothic 1. After Gothic 1 and Gothic 2, the best game from Piranhabytes, in by opinion.

Hand-crafted world

An excellent RPG in an incredibly detailed, hand-crafted world that feels alive and impacted by your presence. Every plant and flower was seemily placed by a designer, meaning that each step off the beaten path is rewarded by some kind of reward or prize. Enemies generally remain dead because you've killed them and there's no natural reason for them to respawn. NPCs have personality, go about their daily business, like patrolling or sleeping. Difficult enemies are difficult until you have the stats and skills to beat them. This sucessor to the Gothic series (minus the Arcania mess) takes the idea of a living world to the next level, which would later be emulated by so many other game studios, but still remains one of the greats. The game is, nonetheless, dated. The combat isn't the best. The AI stinks. There are a handful or large choices, like which of the three factions to join, but no Larian Studios type interactions. It's an old game. But it's a groundwork game, like it's grandfather, Gothic, that should be better regarded than it is. I tend to think of Gothic, Gothic 2, Gothic 3, and Risen 1 (Risen 2, Risen 3, Elex, and Elex 2 get close) as some of the best games ever made, not because of gameplay or story, but because the worlds are just such joys to be in and explore. It's well worth your time to check this game out if you like open-world RPGs, if only to see where some of the best ideas came from. 4/5 Stars - Combat could have been better - even for the time.

Entertaining, but riddled with bugs

The game is visually very attractive, good story, development ETC, most of the other reviews cover this in more detail, but we need to talk about the bugs. Do game devs properly test software anymore? One major bug in the game is you can walk off a long drop and basically just walk down like there are stairs there, quite useful if you're not stuck on realism. Another more critical bug seems to occur when you try to climb up ledges, sometimes it works OK, more often than not the character disappears and you have to kill the process and restart the game. Save frequently, not just because the game is challenging, but because it has flaws in the software. That being said I completed the game today and I did enjoy it, apart from the second mentioned bug. If I am going to shell out money on software I would expect better QA testing, seriously.
