Rise of the Triad (2013)

While i love seeing classics i enjoyed as a child on a 386/486 remade into enjoyable titles, This unfortunatly missed the "Enjoyable" part. I would recommend waiting for a few patches to be released for this one before purchase. Movement and aiming were clunky, and the game lags and stutters on newer systems, due to lack of load optimization. the game looks like a blast to play, but really needs some patches to push through before it will play as good as it looks.

Ouch! Well, that was a bad call... The idea sounded so good: Take an old-school-shooter, produce a remake and start surfing on that retro-wave we are all experiencing these times, to bring back that nostalgic feeling we all know. Unfortunately not even the biggest craving for nostalgia will be of any use, if an unfinished game of such poor quality is released. If you hanker for the gaming-pace and the freedom of a 90s shooter, you better start searching for the dusty originals. Don't waste your time playing this mess...

Never played the original before so I'm not all that in the know of what ROTT is really all about, but this game has scratched an itch that needed to be itched. Not really full of story (is there even really a story?), hit scans that make you pull your hair out on higher difficulty at times because they hit you before you even see them, the system that shows you where you are getting hit from is almost always wrong, and platforming that is the absolute worst thing in all of gaming ever (okay, maybe not that bad but still painful). With that said, it's a fun retro fps game that makes for a good weekend romp. There is some replayability for those that like to cut down on finish times, racking up a higher score, and finding all the secrets in every level. There are also 5 characters to choose from with different health pools and speeds to add a little more replayability. I am currently having a blast going through it, so much I also picked up the original ROTT.

As some already noticed it has some major issues on the technical side and feels quite unpolished. On some systems it runs abysmal. Also for example mouse acceleration cant be disabled and mouse speed is dependant on fps. Editing the games cfgs doesnt help and while the registry fixes helped someone, it didnt work for me. Either way there would be a couple of other problems to fix before i could enjoy the game itself or even join multiplayer because the lobby doesnt work. And while i looked forward to it long enough to have been working since yesterday to get it to run... i am giving up on it now and am trying to remember rott the way it was 20 years ago. Why is it that so few games actually get finished before release nowadays... Cant recommend it. btw on the official forum there was talk about the problems having to do with amd systems. dont know if thats true but there you go.

the game is good but its got bad optimization and frame rate issues. wait for them to patch it before you buy.
