I was a big fan of the original ROTT back in the 90s, along with all the other great FPS games of the time. I had a lot of fun with this remake, both back when it came out in 2013, and again replaying it recently. Of course it's not perfect, and not anywhere near as ground-breaking as the original, but I felt that this developer did a pretty good job capturing the general look and feel of the original game while making a generally fun little shooter.
Would love to play this, since I loved the original back in the 90s, but this is unplayable. Right at the start the player cam spins around and I can't stop it.
Too buggy.
I bought ROTT when it came out, because I really wanted to play an old school shooter like Doom or Duke Nukem. Unfortunately this is just a bad remake,. It has none of the new developments in FPS gaming like cover or leaning but also did not retain the classical features of the old shooters.
Most annoying are the spawning enemies. Spawning is really a deal breaker for me. I hate to clear out a room, walk back and suddenly get attacked by some enemies who where just standing there waiting. On occasion enemies would spawn right before my eyes. If you are extremely slow and careful you can avoid that...but thats not old school shooting right? If I wanna play slow and methodically I buy one of those new stealth games or I reinstall Deus Ex.
You only have 3 weapons. Pistols, MP40 and a third weapon which are mostly rocket launchers or flame throwers. You won't find ammo....bullets are unlimited and rockets are like 10 shots per weapon, then you have to find a new weapon.
Be aware this game might not run very well. My old computer (which had recommended specs) gave me about 20 fps on the lowest settings, my new one gives me 60+ on max settings. There seem to be problems with ATI/AMD cards.
There is finally quicksaving, which you will need because you have to memorize the enemy spawn points to win.
This game is like the 90's original, but with certain technical aspects rooted in early 2000's shooters that's all coated with a decent looking 2013 paint job. Buggy from time to time, but an enjoyable old school shooter regardless. I will say the companies involved with this remake are doing far better things these days.
But the game isn't there yet. Sure the oldschool feelings (these days recognized as nostalgic by those who experienced the origional's release back in the day) is there. How can it not be with the sound producing a recreation of what we now think it sounded back then (it didn't it was much lousier) and the graphics cleverly trying to be modern but represent the old graphics. But it quickly becomes obvious why few have an ancient computer setup with the origional hardware and games and most have modern computers with which they play modern games. Those graphics back then looked like that because they couldn't look better. Now on 1920*1080 or higher such graphics just don't work anymore. It's often hard to make out the important details (like enemies), lots of stuff is a little to dark making you wonder what you're missing, the single player gameplay is just a bit to fast, jump pad's hard to hit right, figuring out the damage radius of your own missiles is tricky (blew myself up with each new explosive weapon i got a couple of times) and there's soooo many of those kind of little things that, as i remember from back in the day, were worked out before beta's came out. Don't get me wrong; i love this shit! Really! But it screams unfinished at you as you go through it. Multiplayer couldn't find any servers, hosted never got populated, and i could go on and on like this for a while.
TL:DR; Nice start and awesome concept. The feeling you're looking for with us old guys is defenatly there sometimes but it's leaning more towards a quake II kind of gameplay and there is tons and tons of little details that you really need to work out before beta releasing this.
One big thing (for me at least) that i think cannot be considered acceptable: No effects in water. The water doesn't know the player is there or even that a nade splodes in it. That is just a no no.....
feature suggestion: Zoom out button which zoomes out to a kind of third person view for the player so the player can look at him/herself (for selfadmiration but also situational overview kind of thing. am i ducking behind the crate or am i ducking half a meter away from it. Am i on the pushpad or just 10cm to the left of it. Is there an enemy behind the crate i am hiding behind or did the enemy walk by and turn the corner.)
Oh and you might want to check the intro sequence. It stuttered the sound, flickered the graphics and kind of (reminding me of the good old days actually) was just too flickering and stuttering to keep listening/watching. I know a 760 isn't high end anymore but an intro coming book thinghy shouldn't be a problem)
Please please please finish this project! It would make finding an excuse for sooooo many wasted hours so much easier as well as solve the age old dilemma whether to sleep or a few more minutes behind the computer for a few months at least.
Any help i can be, i will be.
