RimWorld is a story generator. It’s designed to co-author tragic, twisted, and triumphant stories about imprisoned pirates, desperate colonists, starvation and survival. It works by controlling the “random” events that the world throws at you. Every thunderstorm, pirate raid, and traveling salesman is a card dealt into your story by the AI Storyteller. There are several storytellers to choose from. Randy Random does crazy stuff, Cassandra Classic goes for rising tension, and Phoebe Chillax likes to relax.

Your colonists are not professional settlers – they’re crash-landed survivors from a passenger liner destroyed in orbit. You can end up with a nobleman, an accountant, and a housewife. You’ll acquire more colonists by capturing them in combat and turning them to your side, buying them from slave traders, or taking in refugees. So your colony will always be a motley crew.

Each person’s background is tracked and affects how they play. A nobleman will be great at social skills (recruiting prisoners, negotiating trade prices), but refuse to do physical work. A farm oaf knows how to grow food by long experience, but cannot do research. A nerdy scientist is great at research, but cannot do social tasks at all. A genetically engineered assassin can do nothing but kill – but he does that very well.

Colonists develop - and destroy - relationships. Each has an opinion of the others, which determines whether they'll become lovers, marry, cheat, or fight. Perhaps your two best colonists are happily married - until one of them falls for the dashing surgeon who saved her from a gunshot wound.

The game generates a whole planet from pole to equator. You choose whether to land your crash pods in a cold northern tundra, a parched desert flat, a temperate forest, or a steaming equatorial jungle. Different areas have different animals, plants, diseases, temperatures, rainfall, mineral resources, and terrain. These challenges of surviving in a disease-infested, choking jungle are very different from those in a parched desert wasteland or a frozen tundra with a two-month growing season.

Travel across the planet. You're not stuck in one place. You can form a caravan of people, animals, and prisoners. Rescue kidnapped former allies from pirate outposts, attend peace talks, trade with other factions, attack enemy colonies, and complete other quests. You can even pack up your entire colony and move to a new place. You can use rocket-powered transport pods to travel faster.

You can tame and train animals. Lovable pets will cheer up sad colonists. Farm animals can be worked, milked, and sheared. Attack beasts can be released upon your enemies. There are many animals - cats, labrador retrievers, grizzly bears, camels, cougars, chinchillas, chickens, and exotic alien-like lifeforms.

People in RimWorld constantly observe their situation and surroundings in order to decide how to feel at any given moment. They respond to hunger and fatigue, witnessing death, disrespectfully unburied corpses, being wounded, being left in darkness, getting packed into cramped environments, sleeping outside or in the same room as others, and many other situations. If they're too stressed, they might lash out or break down.

Wounds, infections, prosthetics, and chronic conditions are tracked on each body part and affect characters' capacities. Eye injuries make it hard to shoot or do surgery. Wounded legs slow people down. Hands, brain, mouth, heart, liver, kidneys, stomach, feet, fingers, toes, and more can all be wounded, diseased, or missing, and all have logical in-game effects. And other species have their own body layouts - take off a deer's leg, and it can still hobble on the other three. Take off a rhino's horn, and it's much less dangerous.

You can repair body parts with prosthetics ranging from primitive to transcendent. A peg leg will get Joe Colonist walking after an unfortunate incident with a rhinoceros, but he'll still be quite slow. Buy an expensive bionic leg from a trader the next year, and Joe becomes a superhuman runner. You can even extract, sell, buy, and transplant internal organs.

Challenging but accessible and addictive

Rimworld is easy enough to play and survive (at first at least) if you've played similar games, but there's always more to learn and plenty to do aside from not dying. I found myself looking up some stuff but I learned the majority by playing and trial and error. Yes there is a learning curve but it's manageable. There are plenty of good Youtube tutorials though. While the core game is good, the absurd number of free mods makes this game insanely variable in about every way. From additional weapons or visuals, to making it in a different setting or even genre really. Options abound and take seconds to install (the game comes with a mod folder, most are several megabits). I take breaks and try diff mods, goals, story settings, etc so the replay on this is very high. I am fickle on strategy games, sometimes they feel like homework with menus inside more menus, sometimes I'm hooked. This strikes a balance of accessible depth and playability for me. Yes the graphics are simple and some ppl totally don't get this game, so you might want to check some gameplay videos. Difficulty is quite scalable depending how fast you play vs pause and micromanage, if you reload your save much , explore vs hermit base build and mods.

More fun than I expected

I've gotten sucked into the 'stories'. Honestly though, I've bought into the idea of it being a story generator. Its made me get into accepting mods and accepting defeat, though not in that order. Sometimes its a story of everyone being trampled by rhinoceroses because I made one mistake after another. Sometimes its how our gardener was the hero who saved us all laying on the machine gun and driving off the last of the invaders. In two weeks, I've played about 115 hours and I've enjoyed it.

The best simulators for me

This game is very unique, you can literally do anything inside it depending on your moral. You can play a peaceful community building by selecting community building mode or other storytelling mode for more actions and fun. Don't be fool by the price thinking it's is very expensive the dlc as well, but if you compared it to EUIV or Stellaris this is way more affordable and cheaper with loads of contents and mods. Really thanks the huge modding community for supporting this game and making new contents making the game more enjoyable.

Unsatisfied with the base game

This is a great game however, it is being sold completely at the wrong price point. The justification I see being repeated is that this game offers 'infinite replay value' and after 55 hours of playing the game I cant ever see that being the case without using mods and the equally extortionately priced DLCs as a crutch. I say this as my colony continually seems to encounter the same events over and over again. Heat wave, Eclipse, solar flare, all manner of psychic drone, all of which feel extremely overplayed and like the game is meeting a quota or has decided your going to suffer for while. The combat events in which enemies attempt to siege your colony. To respond to them you have to use the terrible combat system which is only so bad because all of your colonists are complete idiots. They miss at point blank range, refuse to use their gun at melee range and manage to hit allies, especially those using melee like allied animals. Colonists are unable to respond to a threat on their own and will happily die waiting for you to turn on their combat mode as oppose to using the weapon you gave them. Even outside of combat, they are stupid. They will cook or even preform surgery in a dirty room. Will haul item by item instead of stacking them before hauling. But the biggest problem is that they have the emotional maturity of children and you will constantly have a minor break risk warning for at least 4 colonists because its raining or they decided to eat without a table despite the dining hall you built. There are more issues i could mention, UI, UX, the radiant quests. How static the in game economy is. DLC features that the base game desperately needs. Lack of different building options. The game letting you build on an island without any boats in the game. I wouldn't refund this game, I would recommend it even but i wouldn't play without DLC and mods again. Considering the game is 8 years old aswell.

Good base game but mods bring it to a 5

This game is famous for never going on sale but it is absolutely worth the full price. I have over 600 hours on Rimworld on Steam so the dollar-to-time entertainment ratio can't be beat. The base game gets a little stale after about 80-100 hours but that's where the modding community shines. There are so many interesting mods on everything from agriculture to xenomorphs.
