RimWorld is a story generator. It’s designed to co-author tragic, twisted, and triumphant stories about imprisoned pirates, desperate colonists, starvation and survival. It works by controlling the “random” events that the world throws at you. Every thunderstorm, pirate raid, and traveling salesman is a card dealt into your story by the AI Storyteller. There are several storytellers to choose from. Randy Random does crazy stuff, Cassandra Classic goes for rising tension, and Phoebe Chillax likes to relax.

Your colonists are not professional settlers – they’re crash-landed survivors from a passenger liner destroyed in orbit. You can end up with a nobleman, an accountant, and a housewife. You’ll acquire more colonists by capturing them in combat and turning them to your side, buying them from slave traders, or taking in refugees. So your colony will always be a motley crew.

Each person’s background is tracked and affects how they play. A nobleman will be great at social skills (recruiting prisoners, negotiating trade prices), but refuse to do physical work. A farm oaf knows how to grow food by long experience, but cannot do research. A nerdy scientist is great at research, but cannot do social tasks at all. A genetically engineered assassin can do nothing but kill – but he does that very well.

Colonists develop - and destroy - relationships. Each has an opinion of the others, which determines whether they'll become lovers, marry, cheat, or fight. Perhaps your two best colonists are happily married - until one of them falls for the dashing surgeon who saved her from a gunshot wound.

The game generates a whole planet from pole to equator. You choose whether to land your crash pods in a cold northern tundra, a parched desert flat, a temperate forest, or a steaming equatorial jungle. Different areas have different animals, plants, diseases, temperatures, rainfall, mineral resources, and terrain. These challenges of surviving in a disease-infested, choking jungle are very different from those in a parched desert wasteland or a frozen tundra with a two-month growing season.

Travel across the planet. You're not stuck in one place. You can form a caravan of people, animals, and prisoners. Rescue kidnapped former allies from pirate outposts, attend peace talks, trade with other factions, attack enemy colonies, and complete other quests. You can even pack up your entire colony and move to a new place. You can use rocket-powered transport pods to travel faster.

You can tame and train animals. Lovable pets will cheer up sad colonists. Farm animals can be worked, milked, and sheared. Attack beasts can be released upon your enemies. There are many animals - cats, labrador retrievers, grizzly bears, camels, cougars, chinchillas, chickens, and exotic alien-like lifeforms.

People in RimWorld constantly observe their situation and surroundings in order to decide how to feel at any given moment. They respond to hunger and fatigue, witnessing death, disrespectfully unburied corpses, being wounded, being left in darkness, getting packed into cramped environments, sleeping outside or in the same room as others, and many other situations. If they're too stressed, they might lash out or break down.

Wounds, infections, prosthetics, and chronic conditions are tracked on each body part and affect characters' capacities. Eye injuries make it hard to shoot or do surgery. Wounded legs slow people down. Hands, brain, mouth, heart, liver, kidneys, stomach, feet, fingers, toes, and more can all be wounded, diseased, or missing, and all have logical in-game effects. And other species have their own body layouts - take off a deer's leg, and it can still hobble on the other three. Take off a rhino's horn, and it's much less dangerous.

You can repair body parts with prosthetics ranging from primitive to transcendent. A peg leg will get Joe Colonist walking after an unfortunate incident with a rhinoceros, but he'll still be quite slow. Buy an expensive bionic leg from a trader the next year, and Joe becomes a superhuman runner. You can even extract, sell, buy, and transplant internal organs.

Don't fall for the hype

tl;dr : I don't believe it's worth it at this price This is written in 2022 and with the fact this game has been out for 3+ years already. Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad game, I just don't believe it's worth all this hype, and definitely not at this price (especially if you consider the DLCs which add very little content). First and foremost, more mods are pretty much required. I thought I'd give it a go with with vanilla at first and I generally always use "lore friendly" mods, but before long I ended up with close to 100 mods - and a lot of those really are QOL mods. Seriously, this game is old and most updates nowadays are minor fixes and changes. The majority of the new content is from mods, and they are almost exclusively on Steam. I don't blame anybody for this, it's just the current state of affairs. The game itself is decent, but a LOT of the mechanics are not explained in game and you have to go through wikies and forum/reddit posts to figure out what's going on. I always compare games like this with AI War, which had the best context help I've seen in a game. Also, there are some design choices I simply don't get. In a game where the goal is to leave the planet, why the hell are my pawns frustrated if their room isn't a damn penthouse? By the time you launch our ship, you already have a fully-functioning, well defended colony. Why even bother? Also, they will sit on the floor and eat raw meat and complain about it - even if there's an oven and a table nearby. A lot of these are solved with mods, but this gets be back to my original argument. In general, you can probably find a lot of enjoyment in this game, but you'll actually have to work to get it. I get it that some of the things I mentioned are memes these days and that they are part of the game's "charm", so if you're into that, you will probably enjoy this game. But please don't fall for the hype. Check online gameplay videos and see how many mods the average player uses.

Helplessly addicted!

I really wasn't sure about this game. It's definitely not my typical genre and while I do like City/Colony building games, RimWorld looked very abstract to me when I saw it on videos and streams. Eventually I jumped the gun. Now it is suddenly dark outside and GOG Galaxy tells me that I nearly put 10 hours into this game already! What is happening? I cannot help but to highly recommend this game, even if you are - as I am - not good with these kind of games. The AI storytellers (which you can see on the cover art of the game) provide different approaches as to how the game progresses in terms of events and for each you get to chose a difficulty level on top of that. So there's definitely something for every type of player. Get it!

Elon Musk should play this.

I love the struggle. Because that is life. I'm 45 so listen to a man who has played almost everything since the invention of pixels. This is one of the best games for people like me. I want to have a good story. I want to struggle. I want a bad ending. I want a game. I want to expand. I want to shrink. I want to learn and retry. This game gives you a lot of what you want and its just plain fun and relaxing to play. Give it a go, have a laugh, have a long night :) Kind regards Oliver P.S. Elon Musk should play this because he would then realize how hard human interaction in such a situation really is :)

fun at start, frustrating in the end

At the beginning I was quite enthusiastic and tried some ways of playing. Some mods will also help to overcome some bad programming. There are a lot of things you can do for the settlers. The micromanagement is very sophisticated and there are many ways to customize people. Unfortunately, you don't have time for that! You have to get resources as fast as you can and in large quantities. I realized this early on and farmed tons of food and animals, sold a lot, and upgraded my protection skills, weapons, and armor. There were times when, despite huge warehouses, I didn't know where to put all the silver, gold and items. However, the time in which you can do this is very limited, because the NPC sends stronger and stronger enemies at regular intervals. You'll notice this quickly and save a lot of saves so you can reload before attacking. If you don't, you're done for sure! You think this is a good thing? It would be if these enemies didn't just spawn and sweep you off the map without a chance. Even if you have everything you can have, you can barely handle them with luck. Maybe it would be better if these enemies were limited to a certain number of villages, so you could attack the villages to reduce the number of enemies, or you could see them early enough to deal with them, but because the size of the map is too limited(even the biggest), when your place grows they spawn right where you are settling, and esecialy the aliens are much stronger than you are. For some events you could say, well, that's life, you're out of luck, flee and rebuild your camp, but it would be useless because you know you're going to lose in the next wave or two without a chance. All right, there's a "no enemy" mode, but it's not what I'd call a balanced challenge. In the end, I'm pretty disappointed with the game, because it has a lot of good things that were ruined by a poorly implemented enemy-sending automatic.

Rich Drama Game

Cassandra adventure commitment. All DLCs. No mods. 150+ hrs played. The Psychonauts settled in Maryjane, led by scientist Doc, Higgs the marine and architect Pearl. The drug op was going fine, crops harvested, lifestock bred and attacks repelled. People joined, Anima community grew steady. Plague hit two times, killed 4 people in the fall of year 2 and came back in fall of year 3. Soldier Higgs immediately gathered the horses for a caravan, when he and almost all others were struck with malaria. Higgs made it to the next friendly settlement and returned with medicine, only medpacks. Back home he was well tended in the only hospital bed available, it was a very close match, it looked as if he would make it though. Then Pearl, his beloved wife, who owed her survival to her husbands bravery, started a party when her husband was close to death. Higgs the mighty marine, suffering from extreme malaria, jumped out of bed and joined the party. "Malaria, Wine and Most of All His Wife Killed this Brave Marine" epitaph on tombstone. He who tells you this story rage quit Rimworld. For today. Maybe until tonight. Damn this. Rimworld is fantastic, so good it is almost above critique. No complaints, IF the terminally sick would stay in bed, or at least would deliver some explanation for their suicidal defiance. Like zombie walking delirium or sth. Or a diary written by the terrible wife, explaining why she partied while her man was fighting death. This is one of those highly addictive games. Say goodbye to the rest of your life. Bury your loved ones :)
