Return to Monkey Island is an unexpected, thrilling return of series creator Ron Gilbert that continues the story of the legendary adventure games The Secret of Monkey Island and Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge developed in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games.

It’s been many years since Guybrush Threepwood was last locked in a battle of wits with his nemesis, the zombie pirate LeChuck. His true love, Elaine Marley, has turned her focus away from governing and Guybrush himself is adrift and unfulfilled, having never found the Secret of Monkey Island. Hip, young pirate leaders led by Captain Madison have shuffled the old guard from power, Melee Island has taken a turn for the worse, and famed businessman Stan has been imprisoned for ‘marketing-related crimes’.

Banter with old friends and new faces on familiar islands now under dangerous new leadership. Then, take to the high seas and explore the new and unknown as you work your way out of tough predicaments. Clever puzzles, bizarre situations, and devastating ripostes are all that stand between Guybrush and glory.

Return to Point & Click Swashbuckling

Bringing classic point and click gameplay to the modern-day, intrepid pirates will solve puzzles and explore the islands with a clever evolution of classic adventure game controls. Context-sensitive interactions, reactive dialog trees, and an easy-to-use inventory system make pirating a breeze.

Embark on Archipelago Adventures

Navigate the sometimes-friendly confines of Melee Island, a familiar place that finds itself under new management by leaders who have put the squeeze on old friends and new faces. Venture out into uncharted lands like the aptly named Terror Island and the chilling outposts of Brrr Muda to make allies and enemies alike.

Created by a Legendary Crew

The new chapter in the Monkey Island series marks the return of the iconic series’ creator Ron Gilbert, joined by game co-writer Dave Grossman, art director Rex Crowle (Knights & Bikes, Tearaway) and composers Peter McConnell, Michael Land, and Clint Bajakian (Monkey Island, Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge).

The Worst Ending

I have not played the other games in this series, I may check some out for comparison. I did not like the art work in this game, without giving anything away, I thought Threepwood was a selfish jerk, but the real clincher was the empty vapid ending. It was like your at this crowded party having fun and the lights went off for a second and when they came back on no one was there and your just sitting ther staring at an empty room (screen). Wait till it is $5.00

The weakest MI game so far

This game is to Monkey Island games what the "sequel" Star Wars trilogy (VII, VIII, IX) is to the Star Wars franchise: - At first glance, fan service nostalgia trip, but with a twist. It is actually deconstructing and destroying all the characters we got to know and love from the previous games, for seemingly no reason. - At first glance, an identity politics tirade (ex. the new "Pirate Leaders", and a noticeable, calculated increase in female roles), something which should have no place in entertainment in general. On the other hand, it could also be seen as the opposite - the author's cleverly hidden ironical criticism of identity politics. Either way, not something that should be brought up in a light-hearted adventure game. - Retcons all the previous entries, esp. the ending of MI2, but then the reason is lost, since we get a similar (and some might say even worse) ending here. Why? I regret wasting money on this game, even with a discount. One can only hope that someday we will see a renaissance of the genre, but this is definitely not it.

Worthy Entry In The Series

It was pleasantly refreshing to see a return to 2D point-and-click and the new art style worked fine. The puzzles had a nice range, from pretty easy to tricky enough that you might get stuck on a couple for a while- though I never had to consult the built-in hint book, just slept on it and came back with a rested mind, after which the solutions presented themselves. The trivia cards are a nice little side activity to stretch out the game a bit, and there's plenty of nostalgia, nods to continuity, and revisiting old familiar locations and characters without that being the entirety of the game. There's some good funny bits on par with the classic games of the series. It's a fun ride, and feels pretty much like what you'd expect from a Monkey Island title. I'm knocking off a star for two reasons. One, the achievements are completely buggy and during my whole playthrough I only got five or six of them, seemingly at random- this is a problem I haven't had with any other GOG games that feature achievements, and there doesn't seem to be any solution or attention paid to this issue. I probably would have gotten the Steam version if I'd known this would be a thing, as I'm a completionist and it's really annoying. I'd rather have no achievements in the GOG version than broken ones. Second, the ending. I won't post any spoilers, but it's certainly controversial, sending some people into a frothing rage and getting a shrug from others. I didn't absolutely hate it but it definitely wasn't satisfying. I could sort of see what they were going for, and the entire game has some deeper messages it seems to want to convey, hinting at the experience of growing old, the questionable morals of being a quest-obsessed adventure game protagonist, and whether the Secret is really worth the effort and risk, but in the end it's all a bit muddled and seems like it could have been handled better. It doesn't feel like a proper conclusion to the series, but it's still an enjoyable game over all.

Bittersweet game

For background, I love most classic Lucasarts and Sierra adventure games (I grew up with them) so I got very excited when I heard of Return to Monkey Island. After finishing the game, I'm happy and sad and somewhat disappointed at the same time. The story kept me playing, the dialogue is funny and the puzzles are pretty decent, if a tad on the easy side. I wish the game used a more classic UI - if not the old Lucasarts 9 verb UI, then maybe the simpler Sierra UI. The art style is an acquired taste - it's good but I never got used to how Guybrush looks. I really wish the art style was closer to either LeChuck's Revenge or Curse of Monkey Island. The trivia section is cool and the scrapbook is great but I don't think the ending will make sense to anyone who didn't grow up with these games. (In my twenties I probably would've called the ending stupid and awful but now I understand why it is the way it is.) I feel like the 1-star reviews don't consider how hard it is to come up with a story for a sequel that has to live up to that magical feeling that the first 3 games in the series were. I think Ron Gilbert did well on this one - while the ending is slightly disappointing, because it's so final, it's also charming. I kept changing my mind about giving 4 or 5 stars - I decided to give 5: the game is entertaining and I recommend it but I'm not sure it's really for new players. Make sure you play at least the first 3 games in the series before you start this one.

Disappointing

Started out worrisome, got better, but then the ending just really did not land with me and left too many unanswered questions. Reminded me of the Slender Threads ending, which while I also did not like, I felt the 'meta' ending suited that game better and the overall game experience was satisfactory. Return to Monkey Island had some promise but ultimately was not satisfying, and I felt cheated overall by the abrupt and lackluster lack of a real resolution.
