Resident Evil

It's the classic version of the game. That can be good but it can be bad as well. I understand not updating the graphics but it would have been nice if they had created some sort of overlay menu to adjust the game settings, volume, and exit the game. Instead it relies on 90s tech of remember the f9 key exits and adjusting volume before starting (or on external speakers.) Nitpicks aside the game works well. Much better than some classics that require custom dosbox configurations and often fail even then. As for merits of the game. It's more puzzle and exploration than actual survival horror. Fans of modern horror games may find this annoying. Fans of modern action oriented RE games may be disappointed. Those who know classic RE will be very pleased. Lets hope Dino Crisis is next.

This port works out of the box. It also happens to be the original PC version release with the superior original soundtrack.

The original RE PC version, plays really well right out of the box without needing to tinker around with any extra settings or downloadables and with full controller support. This game always had a certain mystery, atmosphere and charm that the others (as great as they are) did not quite match or recreate since. There are a few extra settings you can adjust but it's more or less the original PC release without any major tweaks. As such, it does not have any upscaled background textures or graphics, but these are available as fan made downloadable mods if you wish. The FMV sequences are lower quality than the original PS1 realease, but this is also in-line with the orginal PC version. The audio is slightly lower quality than the PS1 release as well, but only slightly and it doesn't really stand out. That said I had an absolute blast revisiting the original RE Mansion, and it's definitely worth it. This is the only way to legitamately play this game on PC and I totatlly reccomend the purchase. I really appreiciate GOG taking the time and effort to liaise with Capcom to bring this historic genre legend on to modern systems and make it available once again. So grab your Jill sandwich and re-enter the world of survival horror.

It's Resident Evil as it originally was, still a great game but I can't recommend it entirely, as while I am thankful for the support for many different kinds of controllers there is no way to exit the game with a controller. You can use the F9 key but it really needs a way on controller to, surely they could update it so F9 can be assigned to a button or something? If so I'd give this at least a 4.5, it's a classic that started one of my favourite series :) a modern gamer might find it a bit clunky with the tank controls etc but its 28 years old haha thats just how we played back then :)

About time!! All uncut content, never had the chance to play this version in Australia!! still fun, have to mess around with controls a little but its easy as with the control support. Highly recommend this version of the game if youu are a long time veterine or just a new player.
