Your Special Tactics and Rescue Squad has been choppered to a remote mansion to investigate a biotechnical experiment gone hideously wrong. Before you can say "mass murder," you're plunged straight into a deathtrap writhing with man-eating freaks, swarming crows and rabid dogs.
Arm yourself with knives and flame-throwers scavenged from dead teammates. Solve puzzles, disarm traps and unearth mysteries. But beware: every move you make draws you deeper into the deadly embrace of Resident Evil™.
The iconic classic is back, better than ever, and made to last forever. Here's how we ensured it and what you can expect with GOG's version of the game:
Full compatibility with Windows 10 and Windows 11.
All 4 localizations of the game included (English, German, French, Japanese).
Improved DirectX game renderer.
New rendering options (Windowed Mode, Vertical Synchronization Control, Gamma Correction, Integer Scaling, Anti-Aliasing and more).
Improved timing of the cutscenes.
Improved game video player.
Improved game registry settings.
Issue-free game exit and task switching.
Full support for modern controllers (Sony DualSense, Sony DualShock4, Microsoft Xbox Series, Microsoft Xbox One, Microsoft Xbox 360, Nintendo
Switch, Logitech F series and many more) with optimal button binding regardless of the hardware, hotplugging and wireless mode.
Our version of the game keeps all the original content intact – 1996's description is no exception. Take a trip down memory lane and see how Resident Evil™ was described to gamers when it launched all those years ago:
FEATURES:
Completely uncut, with even more blood, graphic violence and gory scenes than the worldwide monster hit version on PlayStation
A swarm of unknown horrors prowl the mansion's hundreds of rooms, including it's underground lairs, the graveyard and some unwelcoming guest houses
Unprecedented detail-intense texture maps, shadows and lighting effects, plus ever-changing camera angles, create a frighteningly rich 3-D environment.
Choose to play tough guy marksman Chris Redfield or hardcore demolition expert Jill Valentine, both brought to life with realistic polygon character graphics.
Ominous digital surround soundtrack features haunting music that intensifies the action.

I found no way to open the Item Menu. Tested both Keyboard and Controller input, always takes me to that button configuration menu. Also, why is the character select spinning?
No director's cut content - especially arrange mode with different camera angles and different items placement.
Rendering resolution of 3D models is very low. It should match the game resolution.
Background could be AI upscaled.
From good things is that it's not censored and the ability to skip the door opening.
For the full RE1 experience you are better off with PSX emulator and Director's Cut version where you can have higher resolution of 3D models and all missing content. You can use fast-forward to skip the door animations.
Hey the fact that this is re-released it's a freaking miracle, but the fact that it's inferior to the SourceNext "patch it yourself" version walking around the internet, for 10 € makes it a nostalgia prank.
I'm always happy to see something good being legally distribuited, but as many say, this is a poor port to be re-released.
People are expecting some add-ons, different versions as option, QoL updates included...
What you made here is a very slim excuse to re-sell a game that honestly everybody can have a better free version.
GOG keeps playing with nostalgia, but in the end,if they keep releasing games with no updates to modern systems and no other added gaming modernities, people will just rather keep to communities and DoItYourself versions of dear old games.
They keep releasing barebones ports of old games and expecting that the buyer goes to the internet and patch the bought games by him/her self.
Who makes this decisions?
Are gamers that stupid?
I'm just sick and tired of this petty greed that preys on the average consumer whishes and needs.
3/5 just for the re-release, 2 points out for the poor job at it.
There is still time to correct the ports, untill then, there are better versions of this game out there.
While the game works reliably for me, the video and audio are heavily compressed. There are also unwelcome changes to the difficulty and no extra modes. So, I would not recommend this one over the PlayStation original.
