Nope.. Only with extreme discount!

Folks, that's the best example of a great start and pathetic finish. Level design is simplified judging of today but gives you good kicks at the beginning... ...but it simply degrades towards the end. Final levels are a bunch of blunt, mediocre technical installations with surrounding fogs, intense steam, falling metallic bridges, coming from nowhere hard-to-kill enemies, radio screams and other pseudo stimulus of fast acting... You don't have this great destructible environment starting from somehow middle of the game. You don't find bonus missions to complete. There is nothing to discover, just to follow predefined linear path to complete the level. Properly started story line becomes flat and unacceptably predictable once you complete first third of the game. It looks like the team working on the game either was completely replaced at some point or got extremely demotivated, so much for a drastic difference you see after 1/3 of the game is complete. The game has overall good balance towards length of the level and general length of the game, but definitely has '0' replay value. Difficulty curve is extreme sharp and once you are half of the game through it becomes simply annoying. Life System with regeneration is fine solution, but it doesn't help much later on. Saving system is per checkpoint/level. Just like on console. Very inconvenient. Bottom line: frustrating and disappointing experience. What's good: I experienced no single technical issue, moving and physics in general are good and it still looks OK for an old game. What's bad: second half of the game is extremely dull/flat/cliche/etc,,. and the game has '0' replay value (not considering the unlocking different models, pictures etc.). Check some longplays and other people feedback prior to purchase to make sure the game fits you. P.S. There was some botmatch option... maybe this will fix it? But I even didn't bother to try when I've completed the game. It was insta-uninstall case.

Just OK

Pretty much constant shooting. Enemies appear to respawn at certain spots until you cross an invisible barrier which stops them. The story is nothing special, just a reason to shoot some bad guys. No relation to the first game. Not a big deal to me but some people seem upset about it. Seems to have more destruction then the first game to me. Mostly you can blow holes in some walls to proceed. Boss fights are rather asinine. Prepare to die. I resorted to cheat codes for the last 3 bosses. Really only 4 bosses.

An Improvement

Keep in mind that I don't play multiplayer, so I don't care about it one bit; that might change how useful this review is to you. If the first game wanted to be Half-Life, this wanted to be Turok, so it's already more fun. The vehicle sections are surprisingly good, and the weapons, while not on Turok's level, are a pretty good bunch, even if many of them become immediately obsolete. It also doesn't throw nearly as much bullshit at you as the first game does; no more instant kills at full health. Your ability to blow up your environment is scaled back quite a bit, but since the first game forgot about it pretty early on, it's no big loss. Maybe not mind-blowing, but definitely an improvement.

Enjoy

Red Faction 2 is nowhere near as good as the original Red Faction. It is however an okay FPS with very good mechanics, i.e. movement and shooting. Graphics and mechanics reminds me of Command & Conquer Renegade. It is prudent as relaxation, it is not interesting enough so that you have to beat it as fast as possible and it can be enjoyed enough so that you don't leave it completely.

Short Mediocrity

The early more tutorialized levels have you using destruction to flank turrets and make openings to objectives promising a degree of agency in how you approach the game. However, most of the time it feels incredibly narrow or even scripted where and when the destruction can be applied. Much more narrow than even the first game. The shooting feels a lot better in this sequel. Spread on automatic weapons does not feel randomized unlike the first game meaning the gunplay feels a lot tighter. Though with how abundant ammunition is I’m not sure why you would use anything other than the explosive weapons which seem to insta-gib most enemies. While also providing you an impressive variety of grenade and thrown explosive types. There are technical issues abound in the PC version of RF2 much like the first game. The mouse feels… weird. Like it’s emulating a console controller. If you have two monitors the game can sometimes permanently minimized itself to the tray after cut-scenes. There are also sound issues I ran into quite sporadically but when it occurred it’s pretty bad. Weirdly enough, I do actually have a lot of nostalgia for this game. I couldn’t even tell you how many times I replayed it as a young kid. But as an adult, I see Red Faction as a franchise more what it really is; through and through mediocre shooters that lean on their themes and gimmicks that themselves e executed average at best.
