Red Faction 2

I don't really understand some of the hate this game gets. It's a solid little shooter, as was the first game. People talk about the first game like it's an incredible classic, and this was the terrible sequel that ruined everything, when to me they're both at nearly the same quality. Just simple, fun little shooters. Much better games you could be playing that inspired them, but they're enjoyable. I prefer the first game but not by a landslide or anything. RF2 is more simple and repetitive, but it's fun so I didn't mind doing the same thing over and over. One thing this game absolutely has over the first is the vibe. The first game was nothing but brown caves and brown corridors. It wasn't bad for a game that relied almost entirely on that, it did squeeze a nice mood out of it, but this has a much stronger feel. When you're down in the sewers and the subway tunnels, it almost evokes the same feeling as playing SiN. It does sometimes rely on duller environments, but it has its strong points.

Despite some overdramatic queens in the review section, this game is not awful. Its to put it bluntly a very average feeling shooter, not groundbreaking but not trash also. Pick it up on sale if you feel like revisiting the early 2000s.

This is a good classic FPS but be warned. If you're running Windows 7 you probably won't be able to adjust the resolution. It will remain at 800 x 600, of course stretched on widescreen monitors, no matter how often you set the resolution in the launcher or even in the config. file. Apparently this is a common problem. Like others, I used all the tricks found on various forums, incl. the Steam ones, and nothing has corrected this issue. I'm disappointed because until now GOG has provided optimized versions for newer OSs (Windows XP through 10) of all the games I've purchased.

This is a better game than people give it credit for, with a good solid single player story and fun gun play.... On the downside the game is only nominally related to the first red faction and it feels like there's less freedom with the destructible environment..... no more digging tunnels with rocket launchers However treat it as a game in its own right and you won't regret your purchase

Red Faction 1 was a groundbreaking (pun intended) game for its time. Red Faction II is such a radical departure from what made the first game great that it feels like it's part of an entirely different series. It plays like any number of dime-a-dozen late 90s FPS games. Definitely a pass. Red Faction 1 and Red Faction Guerrilla are the only games in the series that are must play, while Armaggedon is a decent game but not a must buy.
