Description
In Red Faction, you play Parker, a weary miner who works for the corrupt Ultor Corporation. You reside on Mars, sometime in the future, and when a plague spreads through the mining community, some of the Ultor employees uncover a massive conspiracy. Thus ensues a battle by a group of lowly workers, headed up by the educated Parker, to expose the deadly experiments Ultor has unleashed onto its work force.

Red Faction was a very big leap forward in the FPS genre. It introduced many new technical features such as location-based damage system, real-time skeletal deformation, advanced physics simulation, destructible environment and more. The unprecedented (at the time) interaction with the environment creates a very strong feeling of immersion that is very impressive even by today's standards.
  • Unique set of features such as location-based damage system, real-time skeletal deformation, advanced physics simulation, and destructible environment.
  • An ability to use land, sea, and air vehicles during your missions.
  • Compelling storyline (written by the creators of the famous FreeSpace series) that will keep you hooked for many hours.

Must try the dash faction mod

There was a submarine section where I got stuck, I thought there was a glitch since a door was not opening. Went through a walkthrough, and it turns out it wasn't a glitch, just wasn't doing the right thing. I release the submarine but just a second before it touches the water it explodes. Turns out that is indeed a glitch. Fix? Download and run the Dash Faction mod. Turns this game from playable to a must try. After a few minutes of adjusting to the gameplay though, do switch to hard difficulty. Then you will really feel every bullet you get hit with. Not convinced yet? Checkout the game's soundtrack on youtube Thanks GOG for such gems

Aged like milk

This is an old game, but it's not a very good one by today's standards. Two positive things stick out: the terrain destruction is still pretty impressive and who doesn't want to lead a workers' revolution on Mars? Sadly, the list of gripes is much longer. The gunplay is horrible for two reasons. First, the spread is randomized which makes any medium-to-long-distance shooting play out more like a game of darts than an action movie. And the spread isn't small to begin with. Secondly, the guns are just uninspired. Why are there THREE automatic rifles? These problems are exacerbated by the AI. That randomized spread doesn't seem to affect them in the slightest. Later in the game, every group gets a railgun which is a GUARANTEED one-hit kill and can SHOOT THROUGH WALLS. Bind quicksave to left-click and quickload to right-click, because the only other thing you can do is pray that the aimbot misses. Other than that, the AI isn't even very good. They'll run right into your gun 90% of the time, and then run away if you don't kill them fast enough. Occasionally the AI will just stop on quickload. The game spawns enemies behind you instead of giving them actual tactics. The enemies feel like reskins. Aside from the vehicles and mutants, they're all just dudes in suits. Imagine FEAR without the AI. Level design is middling. The seamless transitions between levels does a lot to make it feel like one big journey. In reality, there are usually just two paths to get to your destination. What a waste of the terrain destruction mechanic. But it is great going from an underground base, to a sub bay, to an underwater section, and then ending up at an underwater facility a half-hour later. I can't emphasize how generic the story is. And with such a great premise too! The dialogue is just as bad. I can't remember a single line from the game except "Parker." For FPS historians only. You might get some fun out of the first couple of hours.

A decent game that I can not recommend

Red Faction has you playing as Parker, a Martian miner who takes part in an armed rebellion against the tyrannic Ultor corporation – because apparently, quitting his job or starting a union weren't options. This is an interesting premise which has not been done much outside of this series, and to top it off, the game tries new things by incorporating stealth and vehicular sections, and is built upon a revolutionary technology that allows you to use explosive to blow up entire walls! Yet, to me the experience itself felt sort of bland. You'll quickly realize that levels, while decent, are largely comprised of big, empty rooms and dead-ends. Their lack of detail can be upsetting, and it turns out that the destructible environments are rarely useful. You have to blow up a few walls to progress in the story, but doing so is rarely a strategic asset or used to open up secret areas. The fact that RF was conceived first and foremost for consoles is blatant, due to both its environments that scream “technical limitations” and its gunplay that feels like it was implemented with a controller scheme in mind, instead of a more appropriate mouse/keyboard. While gunfights are decent fun most of the time, notably due to weapons that feel powerful, they're not super satisfying either when compared to other FPS games of the time, and can feel easy and boring for most of the game. ... That is, until you reach its final quarter. The last hour or so of RF if a huge mess where entire squads of armored mercs spawn in places they should not logically be coming from, flanking your position and one-shotting you with railguns. While the most exciting part of it all, it's painfully cheap. Red Faction still shines in a few places. Most of the vehicles are quite fun to control and it has its share of good gunfights. However, it's mostly unmemorable, either bland or cheaply hard, and I can not really recommend it to anyone who did not experience it in 2001 and is not nostalgic for it.

Still great

To be honest i really love Red faction series. The game personally is very innovative even today of course the graphic's aren't Futuristic or realistic like. but the Game despite its graphic's and its Gameplay to me its still holds as one of the Awesome games from the 2000's

Teeters On the Brink of Greatness

It's a fun game if you're into Y2K era shooters, but to me it felt like it dragged on and on at the end while the level of difficulty escalated to such a degree that I was forced to exploit vulnerabilities in the game engine and AI in order to finish. This involves excessive use of the rail-gun, which can see enemies through walls, often before they've even been triggered to animate. There are also some very frustrating stealth missions early on that require you to keep your line of sight turned away from guards or else incur their wrath. This style of play comes out of left field and never repeats itself. Very strange design choice that doesn't quite work for me. As others have pointed out, it would have been nice to see greater implementation of the GeoMod system in the campaign. It is hardly utilized except around the beginning and end. It sounds as if it might be better implemented in multiplayer, which I have not tried. The shooting elements and weapons design are indeed very solid and would likely make for some very entertaining deathmatches. I was struck by similarities to the original FarCry in the way that the story unfolds. FarCry also attempted its own take on the GeoMod-type terrain modification. It would be interesting to see the two games compared. What would have improved this game? Scrapping the railgun and stealth missions, and fixing AI issues in boss fights. There may be some interesting mods for this game out there that would compel me to revisit it, but the vanilla version teeters on the brink of greatness but never quite takes the leap. If you decide to buy this game, I recommend playing with the Dash Faction mod, which will fix some bugs and give you HD resolution options.
