Red Baron Pack

I'll date myself when I say this but I remember when I was 8 learning how to navigate DOS just to play this game. As such I wasn't the best pilot. I would fly around in endless circles looking for baddies and balloons or see what happens when extreme G forces and steep dives rip your plane apart as you fall to your death. I died more times than all the kills of WWI combined it seemed, but, hell it was fun. Still today I remember those moments and as a kid dumbstruck by what computers could do. This is a great game but for some reason my memories are more about dying and flying without the shooting down enemies bit so it was tough.

I so loved this game in my early 20's i was addicted nearly as much as i was with Elite in my youth. I just wish developers could some how bump up the resolution for GoG.com be nice to play this and many of the games on here at a higher res than the old standard 800x600 or 1024x768.

I remember playing the original Red Baron years ago. It's an excellent WW1 shooter in its own right, but what makes it really shine is the "pilot simulation" angle it has. You rise through the ranks, getting access to better planes, earn medals for particuarly heroic deeds, and get a shot at shooting down some famous WW1 aces such as the titular Red Baron. You can even be shot down and captured by the Germans/Allies (depending on whose side you're on) and put in a POW camp, eventually escaping. And once you die, that's it - there are no continues. Although the graphics are really showing their age, it's worth bearing with it because underneath is an excellent and deep game.

Firstly, let me point out that I'm reviewing just the original RB, not the RB3D. I'll have to find the time to launch it one day... Back to the RB I remember having absolutely loved the original game back when it was released. It was fun to play, you could adjust the difficulty as your skills progressed, you had a very nice career mode, pretty good flight model for its time. OK, when the successors came (AotP and AoE), I very much preferred them to the RB, but that's another story. With that in memory I sat to the RB almost 30 (gosh!) years later. And was disappointed. Of course I expected the graphics and sound but I didn't ezpect that the game would be unplayable. Maybe it's my keyboard (although I don't have issues with other games), maybe it's dosbox, but I can't fly using keyboard. It can't read simultaneous keypresses. So i tried mapping sticks on my pad to dosbox joysticks. Firtly, the game would se the joystick as permanently being in up-right position. But that happens on some computer and requires tweaking the config. Fair enough. But even after repairing said config there was no way to properly remap the controls. They wouldn't just fully work. And the flying using pad also didn't feel right. So - unfortunately, it's not very playable. At least for me. YMMV

in true glory of 3D texture ! it works perfectly on windows 8.1 64 bits, amazing ! i have also the joystick thrusmaster HOTAS working on this game. I think i will explore and finish this truly classic now, not so complicated and hard on system specifications (as Rise of flight), easy to learn and use. Thanks again GOG games.
