Red Baron3d is not a hard core sim. But it is the most fun WW1 flight sim out there! Easy to learn controls, great views and the best campaign out there. There are still servers up for multi play games. Plus the people on the servers are friendly and will help you out. The graphics are not bad, add a terrain mod and wow it looks great! Fly now is great for learning and some quick fights. If you enjoy WW1 aircraft and want to have fun flying and not a huge learning cure, RB3d is the one.
Any of the less than five star reviews can be ignored. Both of these games are awesome. I lost weeks of my life as a kid playing the first one, and I'm currently deep into RB3D. Get the Hell's Angels Super Patch (HASP) and the On The Edge scenery upgrades for RB3D and it becomes an amazing, timeless game. Make sure to get a gunsight generator, as well. All of these mods can be found for free on several sites, but get them quick as many of those sites probably won't be around for much longer.
The lack of sights on most planes is the ONLY drawback. Yes, the controls can be jittery, there is engine torque and lack of trim that make the planes a handful to fly. That is how they were back in WW1. No radar, no radios, and no parachutes. It's amazing the planes could take off hauling the size of balls the pilots had.... Play some fly now or single missions for training, then immerse yourself in an awesome campaign. I'm running Win 8.1 on a regular laptop with a cheapo logitech extreme 3d pro joystick and it all works perfectly.
I think Red Baron (the original) was one of the first games I ever purchased, a budget release on the Kixx XL label, and I used to play it until my ears were ringing from the ratatatatat of the machine guns. Everything from the Dynamix intro and title screen, to the music, the interface, the various text messages and most importantly the iconic medal/promotion cutscenes, are forever burned into my memory.
There's a lot of nostalgia at play here, but that's all thanks to the genuine charm and clean-cut polish that originally made the game so appealing. The graphics still look fine in a stylized manner, since it's mostly simple geometry and from a time before ugly, low-res textures and models too complex for their polycount. Gameplay and controls are still fantastic; the arrow keys and space bar will get you most of the way.
Back in the day I always played with invulnerability or at the very least unlimited ammo, but I just finished for the first time a complete campaign using the realistic settings, and the game holds up really well. It does get repetitive if you play it for too long at a time, and those looking for deep simulation should keep looking, but the simple controls, incredibly fluid gameplay and overall polish and streamlining gives the dogfighting an almost timeless quality that's really enjoyable even today.
