realMyst: Masterpiece Edition v2.0 released!
realMyst: Masterpiece Edition v2.0 is now available! We’ve been busy polishing, shining, cleaning, fixing, tuning, and just generally improving the realMyst experience. This new version is better than ever - here’s a list of some of the things we worked on...

- Improved performance quite a bit
- Improved the look of just about everything
- Improved lighting in many areas
- Squished tons of nasty bugs

realMyst: Masterpiece Edition is a beautifully updated version of realMYST for today’s Mac and Windows computers – celebrating the 20th anniversary of Myst! The worlds have been reconstructed and enhanced to provide realistic water, changing weather, dynamic lighting, life-like foliage, bloom and other camera effects, and more. We’ve even redesigned the interface to provide an enjoyable way to explore for both novices and gamers.

realMyst: Masterpiece Edition – It’s been 20 years since Myst became your world, and there’s never been a better time to revisit the Ages. This newly refreshed and rebuilt version of realMyst is all-things Myst, but amazingly more real. You can explore anywhere, unfettered, and in realtime! Pick your own path through the forest on Myst Island. Listen to the crickets as the sun sets in the Channelwood Age. Relax in the falling leaves in the Selenitic Age. Spin around for a full 360 degree tour of Sirrus’ throne room. Seek shelter from the thunderstorm in Stoneship Age.

And If you’ve ever been overwhelmed by realtime 3D – too many controls or too much motion – realMyst has something for you! You have the option to play the game just like the original Myst – with a simple point and click! Point where you want to go – click the mouse and you move through the world seamlessly to the new location. As a tribute to Myst’s 20th anniversary we’ve also added the original Myst images when you play in this Classic mode. Hold down the shift key and the original Myst image pops up, so you can see the difference and fondly remember that early Myst experience.

We’ve added plenty of new features to enhance and assist you on your journey. So whether you’re visiting Myst for the first time or you want to remember the first time – there’s never been a better reason to lose yourself and let the surrealistic Ages of realMyst become your world.
  • All the original Myst Ages plus bonus Rime Age.
  • Dynamic environments – rippling water, falling rain, waving trees & grass, with advanced graphic effects like bloom, blur, depth of field, etc.
  • Day and night – watch sunsets and sunrises, or explore at night.
  • Haunting Myst music score and dynamic 3D sounds.
  • Classic Point & Click navigation option – just like original Myst.
  • realMyst Hint Guide – get past that one puzzle that’s got you stumped.

day/night cycle is horrible

I love the updated Myst for the graphics, movement, and all those basic improvements. What they should have left out is the fancy improvements such as the day/night cycle. For a puzzle game like Myst, night time makes it horrible to try and figure puzzles out. It becomes very dark and even with the flashlight they added it just makes it frustrating. Most times I just want to leave the game running and wait for the night to end. It's such a silly feature for a game where you have to pay attention to detail on. Should have at least provided an option to turn the cycle off.

Disappointed

I expected much more than I actually got. The graphics are weird, the animations are off putting and the whole thing appears rushed to me. I was expecting something like MYST: End of Ages, only 9 years newer and fancier - but I got something that looks like it was made in 2003. Well, to be fair some things look great while other's don't. The grass looks very nice - so does the water (although it's motion appears to be slowed down to a snail's pace), walls of buildings look awful and edges of objects like books are perfectly straight and unconvincing. The trees are pretty sad as well. There's also this weird scaling thing going on with MYST island. The "Tank", the structure at the highest point of the island - if you walk towards it as close as you can you'd estimate it's a small tank, about 2 meters (6.5ft) in diameter, sitting on top of a 5 meter (16ft) tall "mountain" but once you reach it via the library it is at least 7 meters (23ft) in diameter with walkways and ladders. Was it scaled down from the outside to save polygons? I think the original MYST offers much more immersion and credibility. I'm giving this game three stars because I like the ability to free roam and I like the weather/time of day transitions. The flashlight is something I like using as well - mostly to play around with shadow casting though. Hopefully the 30 year anniversary MYST will do the original some justice.

Enjoyed the crap out of it

If you enjoy logic puzzles then you will most likely enjoy this game. It's Myst, through and through and isn't, as same people have suggested, comparable to crappy ports like Myst for the Nintendo DS. However, some strange choices were made in terms of graphics - including the exclusion of the iconic mist that covered the island and other environments, making the game completely devoid of certain elements of its unique atmosphere and it would seem that certain models from the game have been lifted directly from the original and just had a new texture slapped on to them.

Excellent game, technical flaws

I do not complain about graphics not looking that good but the limited configuration options - especially for handling input devices: There is no way to configure the keys. First i'm used to move with ESDF keys instead of WSAD. Then I'm using the neo keyboard layout which is completely different from the QWERZ/QUERTY Layout. The game uses the typed letter instead of raw keyboard scancodes. Therefore the free immersion mode is completely unusable for me. Also people with french keyboard layout (AZERTY) will have trouble with this. I'm really used to games that handle input incorrectly but please give us then at least the possibility to redefine the keys... Also the Invert mouse option inverts not only the Y axis but also the X axis? RLY?

Simply irresistibly good! This game has set the standard for this type of games for years to come. Gorgeous graphics and wonderful music will trickle your mind into another dimension. Solving puzzles and riddles will satisfy and gratify. The story is that good and intriguing, you will find yourself thinking about it even when not playing... I have never been a fan of 'point & click'; but this one blew me over instantaneously!
