realMyst: Masterpiece Edition v2.0 released!
realMyst: Masterpiece Edition v2.0 is now available! We’ve been busy polishing, shining, cleaning, fixing, tuning, and just generally improving the realMyst experience. This new version is better than ever - here’s a list of some of the things we worked on...

- Improved performance quite a bit
- Improved the look of just about everything
- Improved lighting in many areas
- Squished tons of nasty bugs

realMyst: Masterpiece Edition is a beautifully updated version of realMYST for today’s Mac and Windows computers – celebrating the 20th anniversary of Myst! The worlds have been reconstructed and enhanced to provide realistic water, changing weather, dynamic lighting, life-like foliage, bloom and other camera effects, and more. We’ve even redesigned the interface to provide an enjoyable way to explore for both novices and gamers.

realMyst: Masterpiece Edition – It’s been 20 years since Myst became your world, and there’s never been a better time to revisit the Ages. This newly refreshed and rebuilt version of realMyst is all-things Myst, but amazingly more real. You can explore anywhere, unfettered, and in realtime! Pick your own path through the forest on Myst Island. Listen to the crickets as the sun sets in the Channelwood Age. Relax in the falling leaves in the Selenitic Age. Spin around for a full 360 degree tour of Sirrus’ throne room. Seek shelter from the thunderstorm in Stoneship Age.

And If you’ve ever been overwhelmed by realtime 3D – too many controls or too much motion – realMyst has something for you! You have the option to play the game just like the original Myst – with a simple point and click! Point where you want to go – click the mouse and you move through the world seamlessly to the new location. As a tribute to Myst’s 20th anniversary we’ve also added the original Myst images when you play in this Classic mode. Hold down the shift key and the original Myst image pops up, so you can see the difference and fondly remember that early Myst experience.

We’ve added plenty of new features to enhance and assist you on your journey. So whether you’re visiting Myst for the first time or you want to remember the first time – there’s never been a better reason to lose yourself and let the surrealistic Ages of realMyst become your world.
  • All the original Myst Ages plus bonus Rime Age.
  • Dynamic environments – rippling water, falling rain, waving trees & grass, with advanced graphic effects like bloom, blur, depth of field, etc.
  • Day and night – watch sunsets and sunrises, or explore at night.
  • Haunting Myst music score and dynamic 3D sounds.
  • Classic Point & Click navigation option – just like original Myst.
  • realMyst Hint Guide – get past that one puzzle that’s got you stumped.

Terrible version

This is definitely not the amazing thing many people would have you believe. The navigation is horrendous; a real pain to use. The camera moves around awkwardly, getting way to close to objects, and you can't move and take a look around at the same time. The day/night cycle is a terrible idea in practice. You need to be looking around but suddenly everything around you is completely dark. The water and other effects might look nice, but I would just recommend you by the regular Myst Masterpiece Edition if what you truly value is the gameplay experience.

Broken controls

It could have been a good game, but the controls are so broken, I had to give up. One certain lever doesn't work anymore, no matter how many times I try. So I'm stuck and can't progress any further.

Dull and frustrating

Well, I'll be pretty much taking a dump on people's nostalgia but I don't get why "Myst" is considered such a great classic. I've just played this for the first time, so there's no rose-colored glasses clouding my perception of this game. simply put, it's a frustrating experience. The puzzles are far from intuitive and I could only get so far by using this version in-game hints, which makes me wonder how people managed to get through this back when it was released? There's nothing to let you know what and where things are, I needed the hints just to find the "forechamber", which is a small, not that obvious door to your left when you start. And that forechamber was hinted by a note that was found next to an unrelated building! And so far it looks like that's how the rest of the game is; find some obscure clue, experiment with objects whose purpose is not clear, flip a switch or open a door to an area with some interactable objects that doesn't do anything clear ... I don't mind making my brain work but when I have to take notes and use hints constantly to progress, maybe this is a sign that it's way too difficult. I feel like I'm in the dark, fumbling about in the hope of getting somewhere. After half an hour I don't feel I've accomplished much in this game. Again, I'm let down by a game's great reputation that overshadows an experience that might have been incredible back in its time, but is far from being a masterpiece. Nostalgia doesn'T make a game great and this is a shiny example of that.

2 out of 5. Much worse than I expected.

1) Most of the puzzles are ILLOGICAL. Absurdly illogical. If you are a High IQ person, you like solving puzzles, and you are prone to using your LOGIC and CRITICAL THINKING, this game will frustrate you because you'll be wasting a lot of time trying to figure out what nonsense were the developers thinking about this time when they were designing another "brilliant puzzle". Most of the puzzles' components are not logically connected with eachother. One does not follow the other. Examples: the "Rail cart puzzle" (which is not even a puzzle, it's a waste of your precious time), the "Rose of Winds in the tunnel" puzzle which is apparently should somehow be connected to the Lighthouse (which makes as much sense as "A little bit pregnant" or "Married bachelors"). I have a question: Why haven't you connected a toilet handle with a boiler? Would make just as much sense as your other "puzzles"... 2) A lot of time-wasting activities and back-and-forth running. Example: Blue and Red pages for Blue and Red books in the library. Spoiler Alert! - You don't actually need to collect them in order to reach the game's correct "good" Ending! And even if you did, you cannot carry more than one page at a time due to the lack of inventory, so you have to run back-and-forth from one location to another like a freaking ant, carrying nothing but a single page from a book in your hand. That's pathetic... 3) Empty-looking world with non-clickable objects. Most of the stuff you see cannot be interacted with. It's just a dead picture you are looking at. 4) Bad camera angles and limited directions you can look at. Wrongly placed areas on the screen for changing directions. Example: You simply want to access a particular area, you click on it and the camera makes an unexpected 180 degree turn, which is not what you wanted. Happens very often. 5) Poorly scripted story. There's no way around it. It's boring, shallow and yes, ILLOGICAL. BOTTOM LINE: 2 out of 5. Disappointment.

I dont't like the new sytle

i haven't bought the game, but i don't like the new visual style. Try to compare it with the old Real Myst Indeed, the old Real Myst had no dynamic lightning and a lower polycount, but it captures the original Myst visuals perfectly. The new Real Myst vegetation looks like from FarCry, the levers have very thick borders and some objects have a high, other a low poly-count. Also in many areas the old lightning was much better then the new dynamic lightning. IMHO its another "don't buy" Quickshot from Cyan like the Myst for Nintendo DS and Myst for 3DS. Better stick with the old Real Myst, or the old Masterpiece Edition.
