In Rayman’s world, nature and people live together in peace. One day, the evil Mr. Dark defeats Betilla, the Fairy, and steals the Great Protoon, the provider of harmony and balance. The Electoons who used to gravitate towards it lose their natural stability and scatter all over the world. Strange phenomena begin to occur: freaks and hostile characters appear, capturing every Electoon they can find! The disappearance of the Great Protoon also neutralized all of Betilla’s powers, and she needs time to regenerate before she can help in any way. They definitely need a hero to save them, and it looks like you’re it. It’s now up to Rayman and you to rescue the world.
As a kid I owned a copy of Rayman 1 and it was an instant favorite, I also owned a copy of Rayman Forever but since the days of windows 95/98/2k/XP has pasted and vista/win7 now rule the day, I couldn't play old games because they weren't compatible with the current gen OS's. I am so glad that I stumbled across this site its like a door way to the old and best classics.
I played Rayman for endless amounts of time when I was little, and it is one of the games I have the fondest memories of.
I love everything about this game; the fluid gameplay mechanics, the beautiful environments, the challenge that steadily increases as you get towards the end, and last but probably most important, the music.
One thing I particularly enjoy is the control you have over your character. You are going to die in this game, a lot. But I never felt like it was because of faulty or unresponsive controls. If you die, it's your own fault.
Even though the game is at a low resolution which results in incredibly pixelated graphics, it really looks stunning even by todays standards. The backgrounds and the level design and the tiny details that can be found everywhere makes for a really beautiful game.
The challenge this game presents is not for the faint hearted. As mentioned you will die a lot, and it can be incredibly frustrating. If you find yourself dying at a specific point repeatedly take a break from the game and come back refreshed, because you will end up literally yelling because of the games difficulty.
Even today, this is the game against which I compare all other platforming games. If you haven't yet, try it out.
I'll be honest. I've never played the original game on the Playstation or SEGA Saturn. I've only had the experience of playing this game AFTER playing Rayman Origins and Rayman Legends. So, I'm coming from a less nostalgic perspective than many others might be.
This game can be summed up with three adjectives: fun, colorful, and brutal. Playing this game is interesting, especially to someone who has been bedazzled by the newer titles in the series. It looks great. You won't find yourself in want of a better graphics. It's got some enjoyable platforming, both slow and fast paced. But the major problem I have with the game is why it's hard. It's the kind of difficulty that puts fairness in the back seat. The game doesn't ease you into difficult situations. It throws you into them like a hurricane. While playing I couldn't help but feel like the game was just thrusting me into situations which are only conquerable through trial and error. Both obstacles and rewards will appear out of thin air almost constantly. Slides will lead you to your doom without any indication. Enemies sometimes will seem to take many more hits than usual to kill.
But even with all that, I still feel compelled to go through this game. It's an enjoyable experience, if you can keep your cool in the midst of seemingly unfair losses.
The soundtrack of this game is really beautiful, and for the computers today GOG can't tell me that is too much space, so as long as I don't get full soundtrack one star it is
Not my bag (hence the 4/5 stars I gave it), but I can stomach them if they're done well and a little nostalgia always helps. Rayman Forever succeeds on both fronts and as such if you're after a fun little time-waster in the way of old-school 2D platforming, I see nothing but fun times for all who purchase this game.
