"Enhanced" now requires bethesda acct???

Game good, but couldn't get "Enhanced" to work on LAN (it asks for a bethesda account outside of splitscreen multiplayer). Download the other one if you want to play with friends offline.

this is my life

a few years ago, i tried out the shareware and stopped at e1m3 because it was too scary. eventually, i played through the whole game in 2018, but it was so exhausting: the heavy atmosphere, surprises, and uncaring world took so much energy that i could only manage a map per day at most. now i'm part of the quake mapping community, having made 16 maps as of this writing. it's made a much bigger impact than i thought i would, and surpassed my obsession of doom to where i don't think much about the latter anymore.

A Quake from the past

This game was incredible for it's time and still is... Along with Doom, Quake hold the test of time VERY well. The gameplay is just phenomenal. Quake is Doom, but in 3D, it's as fast paced and insane. This pack comes with 4 games. The main game, and 3 additionnal complete map sets. The main game, while being aweseome, aged a bit though, to me, only the first two episodes are worth playing today because, the 2 last episodes display some very bland and convoluted levels, and sometime very badly design sequences (there are gems through them, don't get me wrong). The other games are just insane. They are more detailed, the level design quality is A+ and it expands in the right direction the storyline, the ambiance and the gameplay of the original game. They didn't try to expand toward universe that are different (*cough* Quake II) , don't try to make maps less dark etc... The only downside is the music, they do not fit the original soundtrack very well... Quake I and metal isn't a perfect match. Fortunately, at least, it provides a bit of rhythm and pushes you to play faster, which is fun. Playing Quake in 4k, 3d accelerated with enhanced graphics with the fog is gorgious. The renderer using 3D acceleration is pretty close to the original software renderer... unlike glQuake and it OpenGL derivatives, the textures are not in bilinear filtered, the gamma is authentic and all the warp effects on the water, lava, sky etc are all present and rendered correctly. I always prefered the software renderer for this reason. This pack comes with Trent Reznor soundtrack, which is a big surprise. If I remember, most if not all re-releases were devoid of it. (probably IP problems). I'm surprised it came from Bethesda.

A masterpiece with annoying pop-ups

The game itself is awesome, of course. And the Remaster that Machine Games and Nightdive Studio had made is good too. I just don't like the giant pop notifications when you unlock achivements. It's really immersion-breaking and I don't know whey they didn't make it optional. I'm playing the offline installation, so no client on, the achievement notifications are scripted in the game itself (Enhanced version). Why? The funny thing is that the Xbox Game Pass version, even if running on a client, doesn't show these immersion-breaking giant achievement notifications. It's a shame!

Fear, when i play

Yes, it's true. Everytime i play "Quake" or the other FPS from id Software from the 90's i become attack of sweating. "Quake" is a fascinating game, i saw this Game on print-magazines and on a Computer Market (a little con about PC-Gaming, very little, but everytime i went to it it was like going on E3 in Atlanta). "Quake" was running on a computer and a very big screen at the centre in the mid of this market and it was screened in Demo-Mode. I bought the Shareware-CD, where "Strife" was on that CD-Ron, too. And when i coming home i must find out to tune up my old PC. 486 / 66 Mhz and 4 MB Ram, and it runs like a slide show. My cousing get's his first PC with Windows 95 and i installed the Shareware on his Computer and it runs really smooth. I love "Quake". So many wonderful memories like with Doom I and II.
