It’s awesome as it was in 1996, but…

I played the original source port, and had a blast, but whenever I tried to play the “enhanced” version, it’s keeps repeating the error message stating it needs Vulkan to work. When I DID find the file, the enhanced version still failed to launch. I’m at a loss here. STILL able to play the game, but not getting the full experience of the 25 year enhanced version…

Mixed bag

Okay. First of all, I'm reviewing the remastered edition which I got for less than a Bigmac costs. The remaster has really high system requirements considering what we see on the screen. It's a game from 1996 with a little better lighting and models. Nothing fancy really. The Kex engine is unacceptable. Bethesda account to download additional content - bad. The main campaign is like it was. Chapter 1-3 are awesome and enjoyable. Chapter 4 is still mindnumbingly stupid. It should not be included in the game at all. Just do yourself a favour and skip it. Just cheat your way through it and kill the boss at the end normally. What I loved is the campaign made by Machine Games. It's enough reason to buy this game. Seriously, it's that good. If you ever completed the original quake start with the "Dimension of the machine" expansion.

Watermark in first person shooters

Wolfenstein 3D pretty much started the craze, showing that what was possible and Doom took that a step farther, showing a much more detailed world. Quake was the next level, and was quite fun. There are reasons it has been ported to almost every system architecture that can run it, from supercomputers to full-immersion 3D devices. (How do they call this a 1998 game, though? Was this a later release than the initial Shareware version of ~1996?) The graphics are grainy and the puzzles often require learning through experience. The controls require tweaking to get just so before the game is comfortable to play. Nevertheless, it's a fun game. I particularly enjoyed playing it with organ fugues or cheerful fiddle music as the BGM.

No music

Haven't gotten very far in the game. Game seems pretty fun, not as good looking as Doom but the enemies so far are pretty interesting as are the weapons but the lack of music just KILLS it for me. I don't blame GOG, this is the same on Steam as well- I know there are probably work around, doing some sort of CD mounting with some 3rd party files but in this age we as gamers shouldn't need to do that. This game simply shouldn't be for sale. If Bethesda wants it out in the world, just give it away for free. Say sorry we can't give you the soundtrack, so we're not going to charge for this. Either that, or just create a new soundtrack or get licensing or something man. But as fun as the gameplay may be, the experience is just empty because of the overwhelming silence in much of the levels.

Want music? Insert a CD!

This is a great game, always has been, I have played it over and over through-out the years as it was the first game that ever got me into online gaming, I joined my first clan while playing Quake and competed for placings for two years. One thing about this game that most people don't realize, it never had an actual soundtrack in the game files, the music was written to the game CD as audio tracks and could be played on any stereo, the opposite is also true, insert a music CD while playing and you can listen to your favorite music while playing, this was a deliberate feature done by id Software that everyone seems to have forgotten. If you want the original tracks then you can find them for download on the internet, then burn an audio CD and away you go. IF YOU WANT MUSIC THEN INSERT AN AUDIO CD! Please update your description GoG and possibly include an audio CD image ready to mount/burn so people can have the full package. I luckily still have my original disc, others aren't so lucky, but everyone should be able to enjoy this game as it was originally created.
