Game Description

Shortly after landing on an alien surface, you learn that hundreds of your men have been reduced to just a few. Now you must fight your way through heavily fortified military installations, lower the city's defenses and shut down the enemy's war machine. Only then will the fate of humanity be known.

About Quake II RTX

Quake II RTX builds on the work of Christoph Schied and the team at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, who added ray tracing to Quake II to create Q2VKPT (in turn building upon the Q2PRO code base). NVIDIA has introduced new path-traced visual effects, has improved texturing, and has made dozens of other changes and improvements, resulting in an experience that rivals games created today, and pushes your RTX hardware to the limit.

Quake II RTX is fully ray-traced and includes the 3 levels from the original shareware distribution.

Purchase Quake II: Quad Damage to access all levels from the base game as well as multiplayer support.

Better off linking directly to the repo

If you goto nvidia's github repo ( https://github.com/NVIDIA/Q2RTX/releases ) you can download not only the latest version but also get the linux version. It is unclear why when all the work is already done for GOG why they can't be bothered to provide a linux version much less an up-to-date windows version. But if you want the game, best to pull it down for free binaries from the github repo directly.

amazing

1 to 1 as the steam version. setup folder in main game folder is a bit sneaky to unlock all levels but its there so no worries for all us offline installer archivists. runs like butter if you undrstand how to use the dynamic resolution scaler in combination with dlss and optimized raycounts even on a raytracing weak 3060 if you check youtube. my 3080 pushes easily 120 in 1440p min 75% dynmic scale with dlss and i think its the best and most sharp dlss implementation in any game for such a low resolution. usually dlss works best with 1440p qualitymode and upwards but quake 2 looks darn crisp even when the dynamic scaler goes internally to 1080p. pop in the dlss 2.2.11 ini file as a replacement and even the slight ghosting issues are gone which dlss 2.0 and 2.1 had. many dont understand this game isnt raytraced, its fully pathtraced, its a different league of traced lighting. it looks and runs as i remember on steam and i hate playing the weakest quake which is quake 2 without it. this really makes me forgive the vanilla games faults more and more you play. i hated quake 2, loved quake 1, but i gladly add quake 2 rtx to the true sequel pile. the graphics change a lot of your attitude for this game if you hated quake 2 previously. beiieve me, together with the soundtrack, its easier to forgive the mediocre dissapointment of the gameplay of quake 2 in comparison to what was a masterpiece with quake 1 as you toke n smoke and rock the soundtrack.

Using a RXT 2070 Super AMD Ryzen 9 3950X

As my title suggests, I get a stable 60FPS (V.Sync locked via driver) and no dips at all, contrary to Octocron says. I also installed this game on a 4TB SSD Samsung EVO (non-M.2). Works well, although it is brighter than it is on the original game. I do like the glass reflections, but the blaster doesn't show off that neat lighting effect like in the original where it looks like a flare shot from Descent 1/2. The textures are smoothed out though, think Skyrim LE vs Skyrim SE, other than that it is the same game, and for now it is free. I'm not complaining, and I wanted to post this review because some people seem to think this won't perform well with 3X cards when it runs just fine on 2X cards. I haven't updated my drivers in a year or so, so it could be that as well. I would chalk it up to system maintenance more than anything if you experience good or bad FPS.

The Definitive Way to play Quake II.

Obviously to use the RTX renderer, you need a GPU capable of Ray Tracing. The RTX remaster looks PHENOMINAL. It showcases the raytracing perfectly presenting it's reflections, lighting, and shadowing. You will need a beefy build to run this in high FPS though especially in higher resolutions above 1080p. It breathes new life into Quake II like never before. You don't have a Ray Tracing-capable GPU but you still want to use the first Q2 official modern source port? Well you are in luck! You can switch the RTX renderer to OpenGL. OpenGL perfectly renders the game exactly how the original was intended to look with great optimization. Only downside to this source port is it's lack of support for both of Q2's expansions and still the need to add in the music yourself in the folder. Otherwise, this is the best source port for Vanilla Q2.

Linux when?

Played on my rx6600m, and it is nice. But when will gog support linux platform? Wine is free, and valve did all the heavy lifting.
