Let's start with the positives: the game is fun, and the idea of combining typical RPG mechanics with typical match-3 mechanics would be great.
Unfortunately, what ruins everything is the AI, which happily cheats even on the normal difficulty level; enemies not only have a lot of health, but even worse, in just a few moves they can make combos (and deal a lot of damage) that result in incredibly lucky gem combinations, and this happens quite often.
If you have a lot of patience, you might have fun; anyone else will be really pissed off.
Boy I loved the old version. Still play it sometimes on my (strangely not dead yet) xbox 360. And I was glad to see it finally available on GOG.
But not once did I have fun playing this version. Wining or loosing seems to be completely decorelated from your ability to play the game. The AI sure does feel like it is cheating, between massive streaks of "4 of the same", literal avalanches of mutipliers and tons of its main color while you struggle to get 3 or 4 mana to get your most basic spell active.
And then cherry on top the Unity spyware that needs to be active by EULA.
Yeap 2 star for nostalgia and uninstall.
Yes, it is a robust design unifying two gaming traditions, the well tested casual games (Match 3 gems game) and the CRPG tradition, simplified, node based, but both make an addictive game that works as a whole.
Basically it is the campaign concept of Warlords Battlecry III with their main quest, traditional pseudolinear gameplay, repetable random missions, sidequests etc. RPG progression and node based continent. The difference is the more casual approach of Puzzle Quest and the combat system, one uses a RTS long battle and the other one Match 3 minigame, faster, but surpringsinly and depending the Match 3 battle (the core of the design) longer and harder than expected.
The game is fun and it is a remaster of the original. Aestetically and how the quest flow, dialogue based, it is also similar to how the classic SNES/GBA Fire Emblem kind of games work but without the wall of text or deep story, In Puzzle Quest all is more subtle and "Diablo" like.
Indeed, addictive and fun game, interface wise it is very clear that it is designed for mobiles or little consoles, but control wise in PC it is perfectly confortable and playable with mouse or even a gamepad.
I can see Warlords Battlecry III, Classic RPGs, Bejeweled, and some aestetics from the console SRPGs influences. No, I am not mad.
I've played the original Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords in 2009 when it was released with CD-Action magazine, but I never went too far. But now, since the Immortal Edition is available on PC with all additional content (almost, see below) that were previously officially available only on consoles (on PC only by using mods) and because of this, I'm really considering finishing the game now.
However, the new version is not perfect. First, it does not feature information about classes difficulty that were present in the previous Nintendo Switch version, The Legend Returns. Second, that version had way more character portraits. And third, there is no Polish language in the game, unlike the original version. For these three reasons, there will be only four stars instead of five until the game will be updated and these issues will be resolved.
One of the best match three games I've ever played. You have gear to equip, multiple skills, crafting and an upgradeable base! There is so much to do in this epic match three RPG!
