Razputin “Raz” Aquato, tra...
Razputin “Raz” Aquato, trained acrobat and powerful young psychic, has realized his lifelong dream of joining the international psychic espionage organization known as the Psychonauts! But these psychic super spies are in trouble. Their leader hasn't been the same since he was rescued from a kidnapping, and what's worse, there's a mole hiding in headquarters.
Combining quirky missions and mysterious conspiracies, Psychonauts 2 is a platform-adventure game with cinematic style and tons of customizable psychic powers. Psychonauts 2 serves up danger, excitement and laughs in equal measure as players guide Raz on a journey through the minds of friends and foes on a quest to defeat a murderous psychic villain.
Experience an imaginative, cinematic story that mixes humor and intrigue, brought to you by legendary game designer Tim Schafer (Grim Fandango, Brütal Legend, Broken Age).
Explore unique environments using Raz’s ability to dive into people’s brains to battle their inner demons, unlock hidden memories, and resolve their emotional baggage.
Leap acrobatically through the air, traversing tightropes and trapezes in a varied, challenging, and joyful platforming experience.
Wield a powerful array of psychic powers to blast, burn and levitate things, or even slow down time itself to solve environmental puzzles and battle strange enemies.
Got GOG especially for this game.
It's very regrettable though that GOG does not offer the achievements for this game... I feel like I'm missing a sense of completion for it. 3/5 for GOG!
Psychonauts 2 is a perfect continuation of Psychonauts in every way.
The stages are all memorable, the experience is really solid.
Story mode you will finish in around 20~30 hours, extra content adds a little bit, but I would've definitely liked to have a little more side quests. That's alright though, it feels polished enough as it is.
Would definitely replay at some point.
It was worth the wait!!
I've loved Psychonauts, because its wit and setpieces entertained and surprised me. I desperately wanted to get into the next mind to see what was going on in there.
Psychonauts 2 gave me more of the same with improved graphics - and I honestly found myself a little bit bored most of the time. Neither the characters nor the somewhat dusty platforming and especially dusty beat 'em up parts wowed me. It was nice to see Raz and some of the gang again and it's a completely decent game, but it didn't leave much of an impression, neither during play nor in hindsight.
It's just so smart to make a real Part Two. Not more or less. A heartwarming, smile-bringing, fun-making Part Two. Of Psychonauts. So nice. Thanks DoubleFine :)
Before this game, judging solely by the state of games industry nowadays, I was expecting this game to be a massive flop, honestly because it had all the ingredients to be so:
- sequel of a game more than decades old, that was acclaimed critically but not so much comercially
- crowdfunded (not on kickstarter, but still)
- made by a studio full of brilliant people who, despite of their brilliancy, sometimes miss their mark
- led by an industry veteran who seemed to be one of those brilliant guys who had their best time in the industry gone, and their current work is not exacly brilliant
but in spite of all that, and against all odds, the game is absolutely amazing, it absolutely delivered everything a sequel should deliver in spades: having it's universe already intruduced by a sequel, it doesn't waste time reexplaining things, and instead throws the player in the deep end, taking time to expand the already established world. Worldbuilding is done swiftly and doesn't overstay it's welcome. it's balls to the wall wacky.
the only bad sides is the gameplay which is a little wonky and outdated, seeing that it wasn't really updated much since the original. i really don't like how sometimes you have to stop the game dead on it's tracks to select abilities, and honestly think it should be done contextually in most instances, especially in regards to traversal abilities. also while the writing is amazing, it doesn't get to "milkman" levels of amazing.
anyway, it's charming, it's fun, it's amazingly well written, and feels like a cohesive, engaging adventure. it's a rarity of a gem in this industry, and it should be appropriately lauded for that. buy this game.
If you're like me and love:
- psychic powers
- things that are comedy on the surface level but then use that to delve into more emotional stories
- surreal artstyles
- character-focused rather than plot-focused writing
, then you'll enjoy Psychonauts 2 (and 1).
That said, here are some of my bigger nitpicks, which hopefully they'll address if there's a Psychonauts 3:
- The gameplay has barely changed, so some of the more dated mechanics like precise platforming that's hard to make out when you're zoomed out this far; or the targeting mechanics for aiming psi blasts and telekinesis; or the camera being a bit finnicky around walls, those are all still in there.
- The collectibles minigames also feel more like a relic. There's too many of them, especially figtments, and while I'll get as many as possible, they're not fun and just feel like an obligation, which detracts from the actual good parts.
- Controls are inefficient: it uses the four shoulder buttons, one of which should always be Levitation, and the other 3 you have to keep opening a menu repeatedly to swap.
Most significantly, the story is very unfocused; by the time I've gone through the fifth mind, it started to feel like I was losing the thread of what was going on in the real world, in order to go through another representation of someone's mind. That someone being a character we haven't seen up until now, and who isn't really developed other than "we need them to open a door we have to get through" or something. And one time, it was three people to open one door.
I liked parts like exploring the casino or meeting with your family, but those are few and far between, and there's very few consequences to the real world. I guess what I'm saying is the main plot feels like a part two of X in a bigger story: a part two that's been stretched out to a whole game, and which needed more substance than all these characters we're introducing individually.
Anyway, Raz and Lili's new outfits are SICK.
