Delve into people's minds as Raz, a powerful young cadet at a psychic summer camp. While working on his merit badge in levitation, Raz discovers that someone is kidnapping psychic children and stealing their brains. To foil this evil plot and earn the title of Psychonaut, Raz must project himself into the mind of one bizarre character after another to battle their nightmares and inner demons. He does all this while continuing to earn psychic merit badges in subjects such as telekinesis, clairvoyance and fire-starting.
This amazing 3D platformer adventure, full of brilliant humor, trippy setting, and surreal action, became famous for its originality and excellence of design. If you're looking for a unique gaming experience, this is a fine pick. More than just fine, as a matter of fact--double fine!
A brilliant story that will not let go of you until you finish the game
An absolutely unique atmosphere with a psychedelical level design by Tim Schafer's famous Double Fine team
One of the greatest titles of the platformer genre
A game for the man who wishes he could fight others demons. This is game is full of humor, character, and wonderful voice acting. The action, worlds, level design, and game mechanics are all brilliantly designed. A must have for all action-adventure fans.
This game deserved far better sales than it got. Like Beyond Good and Evil, it is an excellent game with fairly standard gameplay, lots of character, an entertaining story, and a fantastic style all its own, but it never met with much monetary success. It's a crying shame.
The gameplay is a lot like what would happen if you took the Legend of Zelda series (from OoT on) and made it so Link could jump on command. You get several additional abilities that you can map to the controller buttons (or keys, if you're stuck with the keyboard), and have to switch between to deal with different situations. Nothing really new here.
The game's environment, however, is a breath of fresh air, and makes the game one of the few brilliantly original pieces of gaming made in the last twenty years. The gameplay doesn't get in the way of your exploration of the wonderfully insane worlds you come across, and that's all it needs.
If you utterly loathe 3D platformers, you might give this a pass as it is likely to cause controller-throwing frustration. Failing that, however, you have no excuse to not BUY THIS GAME BUY IT NOW NOW NOW WHY AREN'T YOU CLICKING BUY INSTEAD OF READING THE REST OF THIS REVIEW.
Created by Tim Schafer and the folks at Double Fine, Psychonauts delivers an interesting plot, excentric characters and very enjoyable gameplay.
In this action/adventure, you will control Raz, a young lad who must master various psychic powers during a summer camp, but ends up stumbling upon a big, dangerous plot.
By far, what I enjoyed the most was diving into people's minds, seeing how each one of them was wildly different from the other, based on that character's thoughts and personality.
There's quite a bit of fun to be had here, with about 20 hours of gameplay, maybe a bit more if you would go out of your way to explore the entirety of the locations and seek out all the collectibles (of which there are quite a few).
Overall, an absolute must if you enjoy adventuring, a nice story and funny, quirky characters.
A pretty well made game. I'd never heard of it before seeing it here on GoG, but was pleasantly surprised. There are definitely some areas that could have used a bit more attention to detail, but the game flows well, is quirky and a bit irreverent at times (which I like) and has enough challenging extra's to the game to keep it interesting throughout. It does get a bit repetitive at times, but the ever changing areas and good storyline keep the interest alive to the end.
The game is a port of the N64 game. There are times when this means the controls are a little wonky, especially with the camera. If you remember Mario 64 and other games you can remember how bad that can me.
Those are my only complaints. The game is amazingly fun. You have all sorts of interesting mechanics. The sheer amount of variation of what people say is incredible. You have a lot of various powers, and each character says something unique for each power you use on it. None of the "arrow to my knee" crap of recent games.
Here are some things you can expect in this game: Enter the dreamscapes of the people at the psychic campers, becoming the Mighty Goggolor rampaging over a city of fish, find emotional baggage to clear up in the Meat Circus, uncover the conspiracy behind the milkman and set squirrels on fire.
I am the milkman, my milk is delicious.
