Description
Delve into people's minds as Raz, a powerful young cadet at a psychic summer camp. While working on his merit badge in levitation, Raz discovers that someone is kidnapping psychic children and stealing their brains. To foil this evil plot and earn the title of Psychonaut, Raz must project himself into the mind of one bizarre character after another to battle their nightmares and inner demons. He does all this while continuing to earn psychic merit badges in subjects such as telekinesis, clairvoyance and fire-starting.

This amazing 3D platformer adventure, full of brilliant humor, trippy setting, and surreal action, became famous for its originality and excellence of design. If you're looking for a unique gaming experience, this is a fine pick. More than just fine, as a matter of fact--double fine!
  • A brilliant story that will not let go of you until you finish the game
  • An absolutely unique atmosphere with a psychedelical level design by Tim Schafer's famous Double Fine team
  • One of the greatest titles of the platformer genre

Really good (overall)

A runaway circus kid who has psychic powers infiltrates a summer camp, and has to train to be a psychonaut before his dad comes to pick him up. Music/Audio/Sound/Voice acting: Really good. One or two glitches when using the bacon, but otherwise great. Graphics: Looks like a PS2/Xbox game (which it was) so no surprise there. The unique slightly off look makes everything more doll-like for the characters. Otherwise everything has generally a simple yet elegant look. The only real problem is the higher resolution with low resolution cutscenes. If it could have all been in-engine or updated with better encoded versions, it wouldn't be as... glaring. Story Writing: Good, if confusing. Every character is well fleshed out and more than just NPC's, although on this second playthrough i probably missed a few portions. Gameplay: Refreshing. The game levels change a lot, each mind having it's own set of rules of how it looks and acts, as well as what you need to complete the mission. Be it from playing a chess board game, to wrestling, to finding the milkman. One mechanic allows you to see from another person's eyes, so you can see what you are to them. Collectables: Too many. Difficulty: Easier than the original release. Although this mostly affects the last level. Controller support: Good (played v1.05) Bugs/glitches: Nothing really came up. Nothing game breaking anyways. The usual, not stepping on tightropes correctly a few times, spawning underwater and then resetting to normal moments later (last level). Perhaps the only disappointment is after you complete a mind, you can't really go back and finish other objectives missed. (Escaping early or not finishing won't prevent you from entering again). But the sheer number of collectables (if you go for them) is way too many. That and the forced arrowhead grinding to proceed later (to purchase a gadget). Graphics: 3/5 Sound: 4/5 Voice acting: 4/5 Mechanics/gameplay: 4/5 Writing: 4/5 Final: 3.8 / 5

Great story and gameplay

First of all I wouuld like to say that I really enjoyed to play this game because the story and the characters are great and so original compared to most other games. The game is old but thanks to the really good game design it's still a pleasure to play it and discover all the minds you can explore in this game. Sadly this game has a problem... it's level design! So during most of the game, the level design is still quite ok and not too annoying but in the last part it can become quite awfull and frustrating since you don't see were to go easily and the camera is sometimes doing bad stuff also. So be just aware that some part can be frustrating due to this bad design but except that the game is quite exceptionnal and I would really recommend you to play it since I enjoyed most of my time^^. I'm really looking forward for the realease of psychonauts 2!

Inventive, Funny, Epic

The Saturday morning cartoon of games. The story is just so good. The gameplay is fun. The characters are excellent. It is a warm comfort blanket of a game that makes me feel like a kid in the summer school holidays. It's innocent yet not childish to the point where you feel like your playing Winnie the Pooh the game, oh no.. I'm 27 and still enjoy this game. It has intelligence. The game oozes with inventive style and level design. It's quirky and funny and some of the best gaming fun I've had. A love letter to platformer games.

A Must Play

Psychonauts is without a doubt one of the best and most original 3D platformer ever made. Every detail about the game is so polished that it’s simply impossible to not fall in love with Tim Schafer’s work. You can only be amazed at the ingenuity of the levels with their incredible design and theme. Everything in this game feels so memorable, it’s so well made that after playing the game you can’t stop thinking about everything you saw. Who could forget the ‘Milkman Conspiracy’ ? It’s pure genius ! With it’s very interesting story, charming environments, funny humor, clever level design, beautiful art-style and overall theme; Double Fine Productions first ever game is a true masterpiece that you need to experience at least once in your gamer life.

Classic! Highly recommended!

This game is utterly brilliant in graphics, voice acting, music, plot, and game play even if it is fifteen years old. Buy it if you like this genre of game! I play it on LinuxMint 20 Cinnamon 64-bit. Psychonauts version 1.05 (gog-4). It installs, plays, and performs very well. The only issue I had was that the game defaults to a windowed low screen resolution setting when you first play it. Going in to the graphical settings, for some reason the actual buttons and check mark boxes to change this are all out alignment. It took me nearly twenty minutes of randomly moving the mouse around to find each one to set to full screen and maximum resolution and graphical settings. This is almost a deal breaker, so just be aware that you might encounter this if it is not unique to my setup. I just did some research and found a work around for this problem on the GOG forums. https://www.gog.com/forum/psychonauts/how_to_change_resolution_on_manjaro_linux It really would be better if GOG and/or Double Fine would correct this issue.
