Back in April 2018 hundreds of gamers had a chance to experience an early build of Project Warlock and gave their enthusiastic feedback. The following six months the Buckshot team, with it’s showrunner Jakub Cislo, spent on polishing the game to bring you the most complete and satisfying experience. The end result is something you can check for yourself.
Awesome like 90's but adapted to 2000's. Awesome graphics stylized for 90's games. Masterpiece.
I'm 90's games player my first FPS game was Wolfenstein 3D (I was 8 years old) so this says something about my review.
You open the door on a room full of Zombies and Succubi and... four barrels with little bombs on them(!). You lob a stick of dynamite into the room and BOOM KABOOM giblets and blood and bones fly EVERYWHERE. So viscerally satisfying...
This is a bit of a niche game to be fair but if you loved Wolfenstein or DOOM '95 then this game will be right up your alley. There is a great variety of monsters and weapons and skills for this type of game but the outcome feels like a well thought-out mesh of elements. In particular I like the 'feel' of the weapons and the way the skills modify them. There are a ton of levels with different atmospheres and monsters for each world and huge boss fights. The music gets pretty repetitive but this is a minor gripe.
TL;DR Rock-solid retro FPS with a huge amount of variety and replayability and its only $12 bucks.
As a guy who grew up through the late 80s and 90s with these types of games, I'm absolutely amazed at how great this title is.
The flow is extremely fluid. Unlike other modern 90s shooters, there are no hiccups in the battles here. They are as smooth as butter blending an excellent mix between challenging but not too much (played on normal). What I found greatly entertaining with Project Warlock is that it kept all the good aspects of the old shooters, combined some newer elements such as skills and shed the rough edges modern 90s have of making it too hardcore.
Another thing I liked are the different weapons that I found myself switching between. With the old titles, I would have a linear list of weapons I'd use, according to how much ammo I had. Here, though, I enjoyed switching around between them regardless of ammo. Obviously, some were more efficient than others in certain combat situations but they overlapped - and it didn't bore me to use any.
Lastly, the different maps and monsters are great and varied. It was a nice surprise to see unique enemies throughout chapters and between them. They had different abilities and weaknesses that were fun to learn as I played through the levels.
Bottom line - Highly recommended for shooter fans, old and new.
Let me first say that the 12 dollars is a steal for the time and effort put forward by this amateur developer and his supporting team.
I spent hours playing this. It is simple classic fps carnage. There are a lot of creative and diverse enemy designs and level themes.
My biggest issue is that the dev made all of the worlds flat. There are no steps or ramps like you'd see in Doom or Duke Nukem. He really shot himself in the foot by only making flat worlds.
I think saying they are "boring" is a bit unfair. I think that they are actually quite creative for a flat world, but I think it was a waste of good developer talent. Perhaps it was a programming issue or a character controller issue, but I seriously think the developer needed some more dynamic multi floor level designs. I know he has elevators in the game, but it is seriously not the same.
That being said, this is a great bang for your buck. I had a lot of fun, and think it is worth well over 12 dollars.
Keep it up fellow dev. I want to see you branch out with your level designs and fix any issues that kept you from designing levels more vertical.
As a note that you probably also got, the game is very dark on high settings, but medium fixes it. You may have already updated it. let me check.
