Description
Project Warlock is a first person shooter that fans of Doom, Hexen and Wolfenstein cannot miss. It serves you an exploding cocktail of bullets, spells and monsters. In Project Warlock you battle through 60 levels of non stop action packed with bloodthirsty enemies and challenging bosses. The game offers not just firepower, but perk-based character development, weapon upgrades and unlockable spells system. This high-quality independent gem is priced to appeal to fans of polished indie titles and seekers of classic fps experience alike.

Back in April 2018 hundreds of gamers had a chance to experience an early build of Project Warlock and gave their enthusiastic feedback. The following six months the Buckshot team, with it’s showrunner Jakub Cislo, spent on polishing the game to bring you the most complete and satisfying experience. The end result is something you can check for yourself.

Oh. And John Romero thinks “it looks cool”.

Really solid but has a few issues.

First let me say that I love this game. I have a few missions left according to the mission select and it's been an very enjoyable romp from start to almost finish. I fully intend to finish the last 10% or so, however this game has a few very annoying nitpicks for me. First and foremost the music, some tracks feel very disconnected from the games tempo and when they loop the cut is extremely noticeable. Bear in mind that I have a pair of Sennheiser HD 650s so I might be overly picky when it comes to stuff like this. But a nicer fade out / fade in would have been much nicer than the sharp cuts that bring me out of the experience. On the topic of sound, some of the sound effects are kinda harsh but when the entire soundscape is in play this is a almost non issue. the shotgun shell landing sound is especially odd since it seems to bounce with your movements instead of stay in place where it landed. Second, I could not find a way to run the game in 4K, not even 1440p. That is a big letdown since upscaling from 1080p is kinda noticeable on a 55" TV. When it comes down to it, I'm still having fun with the game and knocking it down a star for the nitpicks seems fair. If my nitpicks aren't something that will annoy you, you could consider my review a 5 star one.

Sadly it's broken.

I wanted to give this a 5/5, I love these type of shooters, but e5m5 is broken and I could not continue, the game instantly makes a game over sound and goes back to the main screen. Overall the game was really fun, the magic was not very useful IMO (just the light cause it's really dark), but the guns are fun to use. Still the product is broken and I feel like I've wasted my time because I could not finish the game, I hope it's patched soon.

Looks good however...

Seems under cooked with limited settings and mouse movement feeling unsmooth and jittery regardless of framerate making it really hard to play without making me nauseous hope a fix comes out soon to give a proper review just want to make people aware.

Pretty good!

I just beat the game on standard difficulty. It took me about 7 hours, and I enjoyed my time with it. The good: - Great old-school fps gameplay with monsterclosets and secrets aplenty! - Each episode has it's own aesthetic, complete with new weapons, spells and enemies. This makes the game feel fresh thoughout the whole game. My favorite episode was episode 2! - Throughout the game you find upgrade points which you spend to modify your weapons and unlock new spells. Every weapon has 2 upgrades which are mutually exclusive. You will not find enough upgrade points to get everything, so spend your points wisely. I put all of my points into the weapons (at the expense of spells), so there is PLENTY of reason for me to go back for another runthrough. - As you kill stuff and find tresure you get experience. Get enough experience and you will level-up, getting a point to spend on one of 4 stats. I forget their names but they equate to: more melee damage, more health, more mana or more ammo. Every fifth level you unlock a perk. There are 10 different perks to choose from (I think), and they all require different attributes. There is little reason to pick anything other than health though, since you can get a nice perk at level 10 that will give you a random statpoint for free when you gain a level. This perk alone should be enough to make up for any shortcomings in the other stats. Since I relied exclusivly on guns I put some points into the 'more ammo' stat to start with. At the end of the game I had roughy 10 in every stat except for the health stat which was at 20+. With clever ammo management this made me into a TANK lategame. The bad: - Poor optimization. I have a solid mid-range computer (i5 Quad, GTX1070 and 32GB DDR3), but struggled to keep a solid 60fps. The game feels very choppy at times, and could definitly use some fine tuning under the hood. - Lack of keybinding options. More is better! All in all: The game rocks, and is well worth your bucks!

It's ok, but sometimes too old

A gloomy hero walks through different epoch mazes and labyrinth, killing everything that moves. No storytelling, no cutscenes, no iron sights or health regenerations - just fast paced shooting enjoyment, like it was in the past. Project Warlock is a tribute to fps games of your father. It looks as 2.5D game with sprite enemies and environment, with tons of guns, catchy rhythmic music and secrets hidden in walls. A bit of modern stuff is added to game for even bigger combat variety - you can upgrade your weapons, granting them new abilities, or even learn some cool magic tricks. But despite that, game suffers some technical and game design choices. Sometimes game sticks too strictly to its oldness, and levels are too blocky, in some cases it's difficult to remember level layout because of environmental uniformity. Several weapons loose those values closer to end., and magic seems to be very additional feature, you can skip it entirely. Level map is obsolete and uninformative, and dynamite should be moved as a grenade but not as standalone weapon. For some reason game demands pretty powerful rig for smooth running, and as I recall this is first game that looks better on medium settings. Why? Game is too dark on high quality, and medium settings just fix this issue by switching off map lightning. Overall Project Warlock is a pleasant experience of cool old-style shooting game. Besides some small issues it's a great debut project made with love to genre's legacy. I wish luck and success to Buckshot Software. Thank you guys for well spent time, I hope to see your new projects in future!
