Description
Due to severe overpopulation, the planet Earth’s diameter is increasing with the growth of towering mega-cities, each inhabited by millions of humans. Buildings are growing ever-upwards, interconnected with a thick web of roads, walkways and service channels. In these giant human hives, only the affluent may feel the rays of the sun and breathe the cleaner air. Your team has been selected to go down and investigate problems at the Real Meat factory, in which all of the equipment has started to simultaneously malfunction. Technicians sent to repair the machinery have gone missing without explanation. The UPA's (Urban Protection Agency) orders are clear: prepare for the descent.

Project Eden is a 3D shooter with an emphasis on puzzle-solving. You'll lead a squad consisting of four UPA agents: Carter Dorlan, Andre Herderman, Minoko Molensky, and Amber Torrelson. Each operative has his or her own special ability that you'll need to master in order to progress. As Carter, use your knack for interrogation and nimble fingers to gain information and unlock doors. When you need something fixed and in a hurry, Andre is your man. Computer terminals are no match for Minoko's hacking talents. Last but not least, Amber can traverse hazardous environments with nary a scratch and she'll be your weapons expert. Brave the lowest strata and prepare to go through hell in Project Eden! If you're looking for some gritty cyberpunk-ish storytelling, challenging puzzles, and original gameplay (with optional drop-in, drop-out co-op), this is your game!

  • Lead 4 specialists in squad-based play into an abyss of vast caverns, snake-like tunnels, and derelict slums filled with cultists, gang-bangers, and mutants.
  • Morphing enemies will challenge you constantly, mutating as soon as you learn how to destroy them.
  • Descend into the darkness alone or with up to 3 friends in co-op multiplayer.

Highly recommended

Never heard of this game before I bought it on GOG on special offer but, to me the playing experience was on a level with the first time that I played Half Life. I just couldn't stop playing it every moment I had spare and more until I had finished it. I had to resort to Youtube a few times for help and mostly this was because after being stuck for an hour or so I became too impatient to progress rather spend more time and work out the answer. Yes, the graphics aren't the best and the story is just ok the challenge for me was to use my team in the most efficient way possible and try to avoid death of any character as much as possible. Death results in regeneration at no power cost or progress loss, the downside is that this can cause the taking thoughtless risk or even committing suicide to repower yourself and your weapon, and because of this it reducees the challenge. What I enjoyed was that it was never too difficult to put me off from wanting to keep progressing. Highly recommended.

Massivly Entertaining

Massive being the key word, the levels for the most part are HUGE, and gives you the sense that you are in the bowels of a once thriving city. The puzzles are really well designed, smart and challenging enough to make you explore, think and act in order to successfully make your way to the end of each level. Although there is a TON of back tracking in this game, which in my honest opinion does gets a little old at times. The characters interesting enough to keep my attention through out the game, even though a little stereotypical in the way they act, especially the leader of the team. The story is some what cool, the setting is fantastic, however I found the ending to be a little welllll . . . . you can check it out and judge for yourself, I personally though it was really anti climatic and weak. All in all it was a fantastic trip down memory lane. It is well worth the purchase to enjoy this well rounded and fun game, even with its few minor flaws.

Really well done TPP adventure!

A really fun adventure of a team of peacekeepers who are after a terroristic gang, which turns into a paranormal/Sci-Fi adventure. The game has a neat feature of limitless character respawning, which means that our heroes can't die and thus the game is quite casual because of it, but it does not make it boring, it is very straightforward in the gameplay and story, and feels right, adding to the gameplay and adventure (such limitless respawning was also in the good and adventurous 'Devastation' by DigitalO, and it only made the game better, awesome, really). There are no RPG elements, though with progress, your team acquires new weapons and gadgets. The level design is complex and interesting, keeping your team in motion, running from place to place, trying to figure out how to get somewhere, separating to do different tasks in a coordinated effort, which all adds up to a fun and interesting game that does not allow the player to get bored. And there are plenty of tough and agile enemies which keep the guns hot. Teammates have unique, personal skills, that need to be taken advantage of correctly in order to achieve success. There are drones that will need to be used for specific purposes Everything in this game is well done. The HUD, the radar, how we control our team - robust setup. Good and nice voices, audio, sound effects, graphics, controls and interfacing with everything, levels and character design, the A.I. - both teammate AI and enemy AI. The game's plot (story) is well thought out, as are missions and objectives. The game runs great on my laptop with integrated graphics. If the game starts in a partial, borderless window, just ALT-TAB to get it right.

Recommendation

I highly recommend Project Eden. Barely stopped playing it after having it installed. Puzzles, action, smooth graphics, good voice acting, great controls, perfect game that I never even knew existed. And there's some Deux Ex-references early on. Any game that has even the slightest touch of Deus Ex in it should be played. I'd also like to add that I have not encountered any technical issues such as annoying glitches that have been raised by other reviewers. The only thing that could be slightly better is the combat (shooting) system which feels a bit awkward at times, but nothing you can't get over.

Game still holds up 20 years later

I just played this through again, having done so back in 2002 just after it came out. The original disc still works on Windows 7, and loads straight up without any fiddling. The graphics are obviously not at modern day standards, and for some reason the cutscene sound is full volume even if the audio settings are below that, but it allows resolutions up to 1920x1080 and looks surprisingly good. But the important thing is the gameplay. Here it is a third-person shooter and puzzle game. Four characters, each with unique abilities that mean you need to get certain people to certain places to progress. Although enjoyable, if you don't know who you need in a given place (and you won't) you will explore with one character, then have to switch to bring another to the same place. And some levels are big. It can be a little frustrating to have to drag characters from halfway across the map. For this reason I give it only four stars rather than five. There is a way to get other characters to follow you, but pathfinding is not perfect and you often end up leaving your colleagues behind. The ability to call people to your location and they get their of their own accord would have been helpful to make some sections less boring. But overall I thoroughly enjoyed my second trip through this game, and highly recommend it.
