How Big Race USA made me a pinball believer

Big Race USA occupies one of those strange, treasured spots on my shelf: that of the unexpectedly marvelous. Having grown up in the age of Nintendo, it was my tendency to dismiss pinball machines as limited things, rooted to their mechanical nature and unable to provide a lasting challenge, or any real depth. And selling one lousy pinball machine as a whole game? That's just silly. However, there are some things that are so well put-together, and lovingly crafted, that they tend to leap over such prejudices. Big Race USA is one such thing. I don't need to tell you about the overall game: it's pinball. You control a few paddles, and can smack the table around, all to keep the ball from falling in the hole, incidentally scoring points along the way. However, Big Race USA has two major things going for it that you might not expect. First, it is a believable pinball simulator, not merely a video game interpretation of one. Though the mechanical parts of the table are rendered in 3D, they perform like real mechanical parts. The flippers, bumpers, spinners, little pop-up trap doors, and the super-strong electromagnets under the table, all interact believably in the table environment and with your pinball. There's nothing "magical" or video-gamey about this table, everything it does is something that real pinball machines do. You can even adjust the *age* of the machine, and how well-maintained it is, enabling subtle effects on the play. The result is the great illusion that you're playing a machine. This is every bit a simulator of a pinball table as IL-2 Sturmovik is a simulator of 1940's military aircraft. The second advantage of Big Race USA is in its depth. Not having many quarters as a kid, I never realized that a pinball game could have any depth beyond a few cheap tricks and multiball. But there's a lot going on here besides trying to keep the ball from falling through to the bottom. The overarching quest is to take your cartoony cab to as many cities in the United States as possible. But, in each city, you can fill your cab with passengers, and drop them off. During that scheme, you'll inevitably trigger a variety of challenges from other cartoony cars, from offroading, to battling aliens, to outrunning the police. Each challenge opens up a part of the table, or reuses a table element, prompting you to complete optional stunts. There's even a store where you can buy stuff to give you an advantage on the field. The bottom line is that there is always something new and exciting to do, usually accomplishing two or three tasks while making progress on a fourth. It's roughly analogous to the depth of a good fighting game: you can play it as a button masher, and have fun that way, or you can persist into the mechanics of the game itself and discover a whole new way of playing. It's up to you. The other advantages to Big Race USA can be quickly summed up in bullet points: - Great, authentic sounds and crisp colorful visuals - Quick, fun play, easily as good as any 'living' pinball machine - Low resource requirements makes it a perfect match for a netbook I never really cared about pinball, and figured that a digital pinball machine wouldn't even be as good as "the real thing." Well, Big Race USA does a great job of impersonating the real thing, and attracting a whole new fan of the genre.

The best pinball game available on GoG.

Pro Pinball is a series of pinball simulations, and this game is the 3rd. Big Race USA has you bouncing and whacking that ball into every little nook and cranny to travel across the country and take place in the biggest race in the world. Big Race starts off on a high note - it looks fabulous, even for it's age. It's not widescreen, but the pre-rendered table and obstacles lend a great resolution to the game. Much better than a non-pre-rendered 3D table. The sounds are fabulous as well, with plenty of "voiceovers" and special effects, not one corner of the game is left untapped and unsounded. The game packs in a lot, a LOT of content. There's so many different "events", like Open the Trunk, the Speedway challenges, the Off Road challenges, the Video mode, delivering passengers, the unique city challenges, and the overarching goal to reach the Big Race (and finish first). The game has a "money" system where you can buy supplies like car upgrades and even a few extra balls from the game's shop - you can spend as much of the game trying to become a millionaire and upgrade the game as playing the challenges. Realism is definitely incredibly high by comparison to other pinball games I've played - the ball moves very realistically, gliding from bumper to target to bumper with a heavenly mist. Tilting and launching works the way you expect it to as well; it really does feel like an actual pinball table. Bonus points for a great looking "dot matrix" display, with high-quality animations and even a bonus minigame played exclusively in that display. The game's longetivity is definitely worth the money - the classic "my score is bigger than yours" always hangs overhead, but the giant map of the U.S. with different locations to visit, with randomized goals for each location, along with the several different routes you can take to the Big Race definitely adds to the replay value. The top-of-the-line feature that puts Big Race and all the other Pro Pinball games ahead of the curve, even today, is the extensive amount of options that are available for change, everything from the amount of balls you get all the way up to how particular lights flash. This opens up the pinball simulation genre to beginners and experts alike, and this is a game over 10 years old! To sum up, Pro Pinball: Big Race USA is one of the best pinball games to ever grace a PC, with it's astounding bore-the-test-of-time graphics, it's amazing amount of content and customizability, and it's pledge to realism make it a game to recommend to anybody who knows how a pinball machine works. And for $5.99, it's a steal.

The ultimate pinball :)

I've always loved this game! I've lost my previous copy several years ago and now thanks to GOG I have it back. Several people reported issues when running this game under XP, but I haven't had any problem so far, it runs perfectly on my box (Core 2 Duo, 2Gb RAM, Audigy 2 sound card, XP sp3). I've run the installation program provided by GOG in Win98/ME compatibility mode (see this link for more details: http://support.empireinteractive.com/default.aspx?MID=60568495217F&PID=FC8A19A3-F7F3-4719-A578-86C6120DECAC) and haven't had any problem whatsoever.

DRM Free!

I still have the CD version of this brilliant pinball simulator. I used to play it a lot, but swapping CDs over became too much of a drag. This DRM free version has given it a new lease of life for me. It even works on the Mac under CrossOver Games.

Best

No doubt the best. Even after all these years. Wish someone would make pinball this well today. I do enjoy other very good pinball games and the propinball series is still the best, with Big Race the best of the best.
