Description
The year is 2020. After an environmental holocaust of devastating proportions, the population hovers slightly above the zero mark. The rich have fled underground, where they have formed corporate enclaves. Above ground, the desolate cities and desert wastelands are inhabited by a feral population of freaks and survivors. With 98% of the population dead there's a lot of cars around just waiting to get driven into the ground. The ferals started the Powersliding competition, the corporates banned it. It's dangerous, it's illegal, it kicks butt.
Powerslide is the off-road racing game that makes its own damn track. Through the punishing post-apocalyptic terrain and abandoned, ghostly cityscapes, brutal alpine tracks and icy roadways. You’ll be torching the tundra. Scorching the Savannah. Leaping over canyons. Surfing mud-slides and braving perilous urban and outdoor environments. You’ll be feeding the off-road speed demon within.

After the upgrade from Win 2000 to Win XP the game seized to work on my desktop. This was around 2002-3. Now - 12 years later it is running like a champ on my Samsung laptop. I recommend selecting the Glide graphics - although only 800x600 resolution, but it runs like hell on an i7 processor and Win 8!!!
I love this!
THANKS GOG - welldone! I love it!!!!
I don't know how I missed this thing back in '98, I must have been playing Carmageddon. If you were born in the 80's and still hang out on GOG, this is a must. Surpisingly good arcade racing to be had here, demands skill but it still a bit off it's rocker. The strangest thing is the great sound track, some of these songs seem like that were put together by some pretty serious musicians! Of course the next song may have some 90's German house music vibes, but still, it's pretty good! Clearly this is geared towards some Cult fun, but it's running clean on my Windows 10 - come join the party!
Post-apocalypse rally racing. Cool cars, cool tracks. VERY aggressive AI racers, feels great to smash into them. Going for all firsts on the insane championship might make you break a few controllers, but you can always just relax by exploring the tracks looking for cheat codes. A god damn tragedy that Ratbag games never got the chance to release the sequel.
I was searching for this game and rollcage 1, 2 few months ago. A BIG amazing surprize that GOG added these gems to the their store.
... wait am i reviewing GOG or the game???
I will admit I did not play this when it came out. So for me, this is a fresh experience. This is a game that originally came out in 1998, and it definitely looks like a product of it's time. So I will not fault it for visuals, or overall lack of polish. In fact, aside from mouse stuttering issues in the main menus, the game runs extremely well, and is very easy to pick up and play.
One thing I will say though is this is best played with a controller, or a racing wheel if you have one. I personally played this with an XBOX One controller. After some basic remapping, which was not difficult to do, the game controlled extremely well. Do not use the default controller configuration though! And I say it's better to use these sorts of controls over a keyboard mainly due to the more precise steering.
That said, overall, this is a decent little title. Very grimy looking with an overall dark aesthetic representative of the wasteland setting that takes place in the game. Music is all over the place with various experimental sounds fusing various genres ranging from industrial to electronic to even some crazy banjo music on one track. It all seems to fit the motif well. Nothing really stood out with the music overall, but none of it was distracting either, which is good.
So what about the actual gameplay? What about the racing? Well, this is where the game sort of falls short for me. First and foremost, it is definitely an arcade style racing game. Which is fine. It's also an off road racing game. Also fine. My main issue is that the game has an overall slippery feel to it. I guess maybe this game was called Powerslide because that is what you feel like you're doing in every turn, even when you don't want to. I mean it's not a bad thing, but it's not exactly great either. Also the tracks themselves while looking nice come off as rather boring and uninspired.
Overall, it's not a terrible game. But it's definitely far from other great racing games of this era.
