Poorly balanced and confusing combat.

I'm 20 hours in and three times the game has explicitly told me to go places, and there has always been overpowered enemies there. Two times the game locked me in and AMBUSHED me, with no chance of escape or alternative solutions other than re-loading. Combat is also real-time, but it's impossible to see what is going on, so you need to constantly pause and read the log. If you don't, all time is spent looking at some very tiny symbols in the bottom left corner on the player portraits, instead of the actual game. I'll slog on, but I'm not having a particularly good time. Mechanically, the Divinity games are much better, and their quests have many alternative solutions, so I'd recommend those instead.

One of my top favorites

Pillars of Eternity is a very good CRPG style title. One that enthralled me to repeatedly play this several times. The main and side quests’ are very well done, really enjoyed it. And The White March expansions are great and adds a lot to PoE. Becoming a lord of a keep is fun, takes a bit of cp to rebuild it. And battles on your keep you can auto or manually resolve, but be prepared to do repairs if you select auto resolve. The writing is well done. Some people go as far to say it’s atrocious, but I’ve read a lot worse from myself and friends after a day or night of drinking. Or even say it’s like reading a book. What's so bad 'bout reading a book in the first place. It’s a very small book compared to Torment: Tides of Numenera. The voice acting is well done where there is voice acting. With my characters I have the voice selected as ‘none’, it gets a bit annoying over long hours. And in some parts of The White March I gotta turn the volume down. Guessing they didn't do a volume check. Pillars of Eternity is definitely the game to go to when you have that CRPG itch. 5 stars in my list book.

Back to the beginning.

This game took me right back to my youth playing baldurs gate 1 and 2 into the early hours of the morning. Telling myself just finish this next quest, just talk to these people, just go to this store. The writing was very solid, there was just enough voice acting to keep me invested(although i do enjoy a good read, so the text walls did not bother me so much) and the characters were great. I have not found myself so interested in companion character/party members since mass effect 2. I felt real depth, progression, investment with this title. I found myself wondering what would happen next while i was not playing. Is there anything groundbreaking, game changing? No, not really, however in a day and age where games seem to release with less and less substance, i find it refreshing to drop 50 hours into a game and still have story and progress to unfold. Not only that, but to still be interested in the story that is there, i find that phenomenal. This is exactly the kind of game i have been hoping for..... for years at least. Thank you obsidian! If you enjoyed Bladurs Gate, Fallout, Icewind dale, Arcanum, this is right up your alley.

Really good, but not great.

Divinity: Original Sin 2 is one of my favorite games and after completing it I decided to pick up Pillars of Eternity. I love the original Fallout games, Baldur's Gate and the like. So needless to say this game scratched an itch that I had. It is excellent in some ways, but falls short in others. Pros: - Interesting gear and progression systems. - Quality writing and quests. - Reasonably interesting companions. - A full world to explore and uncover. Cons: - While the writing is good, there is a lot of it. Too much, I would say. - Real-time with pause is alright, I suppose. But it is hard for me to really get to know my characters and how they function in this system. This is a preference thing, but I much prefer turn-based combat. - There are a lot of load screens and a lot of walking around. I haven't fully finished the game yet, but from my understanding a playthrough takes 40-60 hours. I enjoy this game, but too much of that 40-60 hours is spent wandering around and moving from area to area. If I could give a single tip to enjoy this game it would be to have fun with the things you are having fun with. You do not have to read everything, you do not have to understanding everything. If there is a quest you think is interesting, do it. If there is a massive wall of text you think looks interesting, read it... but if not, just skip that stuff. If you try to force yourself to take in every little thing it will kill the fun of the game... at least it did for me. I enjoyed it a lot more when I just started doing the things I found interesting. Another tip would be that if you get stuck on an encounter, don't feel like you have to force your way through it. You can go and do other things, then come back. This game isn't very linear, sometimes you run into things you can't do and you have to come back.

Do not run offline on my computer....

I bought this game here with extensions some time ago now had the opportunity to install. Unfortunately, I had to say that this game is not running offline on my computer . If the firewall blocks the network access crashes the game directly at the start. Lets the firewall through both desired connections, the game starts easily. That's pretty disappointing.
