Pillars of Eternity 2 is arguably Obsidian's best RPG. It's my favorite party based RPG for sure, only recently challenged by Pathfinder:Wrath of the Righteous. Baldur's Gate 3 is great, but something about the non-D&D system in PoEt2 is just so much more impressive to me. It's a shame this game never got the fame and reception it deserved. Hopefully people who got into the CRPG realm from BG3 find PoEt2 though and love it.
I don't know why I expected more of PoE1 but I'm happy with what I'm getting with Deadfire.
However, performance is pretty bad,
Running a 3090ti w/ a Ryzen 5800X3D in the highest settings, getting 50fps @ 1080p. I've heard it gets better with a higher resolution, but I have never had this problem with any game released from before 2020
After playing through BG1, BG2 and PoE1, I enjoyed them all so much. I found them to be a bit too easy at times, PoE1 I finished on Hard. I don't know what the problem is, but balancing in this game appears to be wonky. You'll see countless reviews about how this game is too easy, even on PotD. From what I gather, it becomes too easy after the initial part ... but I'm experiencing the exact opposite problem: the game is way too hard early on. I'm getting 1-shot by certain enemies, and like I said, I played through PoE 1 on hard. I'll be leaving this one on the shelf for a while, in hopes that it becomes a bit easier or balanced early on, as my tank should never be out of the game that fast.
Basically, this game has changed a lot from PoE 1, and half the people seem to like this newfound "polish," but I find the polish has been over-emphasized and the game feels stale in a way I can't describe but am disappointed by nevertheless. I'm happy to buy this game though and don't regret it, as I want to see the genre keep growing.
If you want an old school CRPG experience, PoE 1 is that game. If you want a new experience that seems to be growing with the times, try this one first. I guess I was looking for something more akin to old school genre.
I had high expectations for this game, but it has many flaws.
The initial characters you meet are great and neat. They talk to you, talk to each other, react to things going on, etc. They really add to the enjoyment of the game. Then you start running into the filler. You know, those characters that don't' really have a reason to exist except to add meaningless dlc or some backer's wish. Half of the companions are filler. Some do not even talk at all. Not one word. Some are quite interesting (at least looking), but they don't contribute to the enjoyment of the game at all. Hours and hours of silence if you bring them along with you. This also happens if you stop following Eloas around and finish the game early.
I like to steal stuff in these games. Why do I have buy a rogue from the bar or do it with a non-rogue character for over half the game until I then get an under powered rogue to follow me around. Damm annoying it is.
Ship combat is the worst thing ever. It's like having sex with your clothes on. Just ram them and let the slaughter proceed. Also no real reason to get another boat. It's just not needed, and you can't crew/use more than one anyway. You also can't salvage a boat. I just killed every single person on this boat, it's better than mine.. and I just leave it there. stupid.
I liked being able to upgrade my party's existing gear but where are all the soul-bound weapons? Very few and far between. You know what would be neat, have every companion have one from the get-go. And then when I got a few, there was no time to get them charged up. Same with the guns, took forever to find a special gun or six. It also makes no sense that I can buy a superb weapon for cheaper than I can upgrade it myself. It shoudn't hurt more to use the crafting system.
Overall if you liked the first one you'll enjoy this one. It's prettier, but not sure It's what I expected.
