Deserved continuation
The games trully expands upon the main questline themes. Gameplay wise, steps up quite a lot, replayability is expanded in my humble opinion, with many more variations of classes and subclasses. While at first it wasn't something you would expect, coming from the previous title, some of the subclasses restrictions really start to make sense about halfway into the main quests. It additionally, although not so greatly, rewards you exploring and finishing character stories of the first title, with little hints of what happens to those characters and options based on your previous decisions; the greatest of them was by far Beast of Winter DLC for me. Companions development greatly increases in depth compared to previous title, which makes progressing their paths, quite satisfying. The game also adds romance, which personally makes a great addition roleplay wise, though interactions are not expanded upon once you complete romance with one of the companions and there's no harem options >:c Come on! Sidekicks were great as well, some of them provide great insight into DLC content, I'm just sad they weren't as interactable. Many of the main critics received, and I include myself at least for the first few hours of gameplay, was that the game relies too much on the voyages; people didn't take traveling by boat too kind. It does become repetitive halfway through campaign. But is a nice little thing to do when you don't have anything else to focus on, so you just go on a bounty hunting mission! I recommend this game 100%. If you don't mind the voyage system, this game has a lot to offer, even if you didn't play the first title, though, you're missing out on stuff my friend... go play the PoE 1 as well!
