Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire

Arguably the most beautiful isometric-ish games ever. The lighting is stunning, the maps are filled with details, animations and interesting objects and characters. I wanted to take screenshots of every single location. Even a dark cave looks interesting thanks to the dynamic lighting (Xoti’s lantern is a great showcase for that). Deadfire is also a big step up in terms of the overworld map. I quite liked the stronghold mechanics of the first game but the fantasy of having your own ship and crew and just explore a whole region is undeniable. In terms of story, the main quest is clearly an afterthought compared to the factions and side quests the game offers. It’s also different in mood and tone, and whichever you prefer depends on the type of player you are. So, overall, a great sequel that looks amazing, and trades moodiness and a very complex main quest for freedom and exploration. A must-play for CRPG fans, for sure.

Infinitely worse than the first game in nearly every aspect besides visuals. The combat is worse, the writing is worse, the companions are worse. Play the first one or a better CRPG.

If you liked crpg's like Baldur's Gate 1,2 and Planescape Torment, you will love this game so much! -> Tactical Real-Time with Pause (RTWP) system, just like the Original BG games. -> Streamlining some old frustrating mechanics. Example: As soon as a battle is finished, you will regain all your hitpoints and special abilities, forcing players not to rest all the time. Resting is still needed to cure inflicted wounds (which you can have max 3 of before dieing) and to regain all your power bonuses which can enhance your abilities whenever you choose in combat. -> The most beautifully rendered 2D landscapes in a game ever! -> More choices and consequences than in most crpg's. -> As of 5.0 you can board enemy ships straight away, getting a gateway out of the undercooked ship combat mechanics that existed since the earliest versions of the game. -> All npc are voice acted.

One of my all time favourites... Sad that there will be no third part. If you love isometric RPGs with great story, loveable charaters and a rich world... go for it!
