A very solid 2.5d platformer(4.5 stars)
Okay let me start by saying that the game looks like it is using a software render when in fact it is using 3dfx, the reason for this is not because of GOG or Nglide but because that is how Crystal Dynamics coded the game. Now with that out of the way, so how is the actual game? Well first off it's a basic 2.5d run and jump platformer like Kalona. The levels use 3d models in a 2d space and because of this the developers decided to have the levels twist around in some form or another, it's really nice to see at first but after the first two levels you probably hardly notice it(or at least I didn't) the levels seem to be varied enough to not feel too repetitive for example in stage 1 you running around, hopping on watermelons and bouncing off creatures in a open area with various paths and areas with stuff to find while in stage 2 your moving along a tower which once you reach a point your chased back down by a moving spike wall trap only to enter a door and take a elevator to the top of and through the glass ceiling of the tower, there is also points in the game where you will have to shapeshift into various animals to progress through the game such as a rhino, a frog, a dragon,a turtle, and so on. So it does break the game play up. Plus the controls are tight and feel solid and the music is quite catchy though they are different from it's PS1 counterpart, now this isn't a bad thing as I find the music in this version to be more catchier and fitting then the PS1 music in alot of stages. The game also features two playable characters with slight differences between the two Nikki being a magic user and a former acrobat can double jump and seems to jump higher while Fargus the jester can't seem to jump as high nor can he double jump but can deliver a nasty spinning attack. Outside of that there's not much to differ the two as they can use the same powerups and can shape change when needed. So what do I think overall, well while as I said the game is very solid with nice well designed levels, two playable characters that feel slightly different, nice catchy tunes, and some nice little ideas such as animal shape shifting and some power ups such as a shrink blast and such, underneath all of this the core of the game still your basic run and jump platformer a really fun and well done one but nothing standout or truly remarkable. Now this is not a bad thing but I feel I should point this out as it for this reason that if I could I would give it 4.5 stars and not 5.
