Oxenfree is a supernatural thriller about a group of friends who unwittingly open a ghostly rift. Play as Alex, a bright, rebellious teenager who brings her new stepbrother Jonas to an overnight party on an old military island. The night takes a terrifying turn when you unwittingly open a ghostly gate spawned from the island’s cryptic past. How you deal with these events, your peers, and the ominous creatures you’ve unleashed is up to you.
YOU determine every aspect of Alex's story while exploring Edwards Island, uncovering the base's dark past, and changing the course of your friends' lives.
A mind-bending supernatural adventure full of mystery and terror
An intelligent conversation system that changes the story and your relationships based on every decision
A unique radio mechanic that allows Alex to communicate with mysterious spectres and manipulate her world
What I liked about this game is feel of discovery, just like in childhood. Though, as many have said, there's too little time to think of an answer, I liked the implementaion, since your actions don't interrupt your words.
Characters are too bleak to remebrer, and that's really a shame for a game with "teen drama"
As for the gameplay, it was the one same puzzle for a whole game, and it's frustrating
Ending was predictable enough and didn't make me feel some kind of awe
Still, till the end of the game I feel immersed and completed it from a beginning for a one evening
If you like choice based, story driven games, this is definitely for you. I really love how many endings are possible and that your choices ACTUALLY make a difference. I like the dialogues and the narration and the creepy backstory.
This looked like yet another uninteresting point&click clone but the story quickly became rather interesting.
The whole game keeps the creepy/weird feeling really well, along with moderate amount of useless walking and puzzles. The caracters are also feel real, not just empty NPCs walking all over the scenes. The puzzles are rather easy, but it's not a huge problem if you like to enjoy an interesting story.
The graphics is also nice.
Oh, and there are multiple endings, in fact there is no "ending", but various outcomes in many aspects of your characters, based on your decisions. Some characters may even die and you still able to finish. Possibly multiple times, if you are curious...
Overall, it's a good game.
I got this game for free years ago and it sat on my hard drive for most of that time untouched. When I finally did get around to it I was sad I hadn't played it sooner.
The story was exciting and had me hooked. It is a mixture of coming of age, mystery and psychological horror. The technical and artistic realisation is very well done, graphics, effects, atmospheric music and sound support the story perfectly. From my point of view, however, the game also has its weaknesses, otherwise I would have given it 5 points:
The controls and especially the dialogue are poorly implemented. The dialogue is hectic, jumbled and you constantly miss some information or press on too quickly because someone in the teen group is babbling irrelevantly. A systematic approach, as I usually pursue in adventure games, is almost impossible here. Moreover, the puzzles are very simple or they mostly consist of a constant and annoying running back and forth of longer distances across the island.
Oxenfree is clearly a point-and-click adventure, but certainly not a classic implementation. There are refreshing, new approaches but also annoying ones. In terms of gameplay, Oxenfree is certainly aimed more at a young Generation Z audience, and less at old, dogmatic "adventure dinosaurs" like me, who grew up with more uncomfortable games like Space Quest, Maniac Mansion, etc, which were unforgiving of the smallest mistakes. Nevertheless, I quite enjoyed it and can recommend it to any adventure game enthusiast who wants to try something new.
