Good early base management/RTS mix

I haven't bought the game on GOG, but I own the original CD release, which should be identical to what you get here (including the screen resolution limit, which is 1024×768 in-game, but only 640×480 in the menu). The general look and feel of the game was already a bit outdated at the time of the original release, and that's one reason I won't give it five stars. The other negative point is the audio. The sound effects are "strange" and repetitive, clicking on a unit/building will play the same sound every time for each type. After the original Outpost release, a round-based management game which was never completed and had numerous game breaking bugs, Sierra released this game. First of all, except for the general setting, the colony management idea and the title, the commonalities end here. Outpost 2 is rather a real-time strategy game which also requires you to manage your base and keep your colonists happy. A big factor that adds to the overall challenge are different types of disasters that can happen randomly, like electrical storms, tornadoes, volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. Also, in the late campaign, you'll encounter an even deadlier event in addition to these disasters. In contrast to it's predecessor, you can play two different factions with slightly different units, the colonies Eden and Plymouth - each one has their own campaign, with a slightly different storyline and ending. The differences only affect military units, the colony management generally works equally for both factions. There is still a small community supporting the game, with some patches available as others stated. So of you're into classic RTS games, give this one a try - even if it's old and looks/sounds cheap, the gameplay makes up for it and is certainly worth a few bucks.

good ideas, brutal mistake punishments

It may not say verified owner but I've played this at least once per year for a week at a time in some capacity since it was released in '97, so I can definitely say my playtime on this approaches dozens if not a couple hundred hours. Outpost 2 is a very interesting game, in that it seems simple and straightforward - you build a base with an initially limited array of options that gradually expands as you do research. You try to not get overrun by enemies or natural disasters, to either finish the campaign mission, or reach a given target (build a colony ship/reach a certain population threshold). These things combine to make it so every decision you make as to what to build next tends to hold at least some weight. Adding to this need to make the correct decision is the way resources and population work. While building materials are simple in this game, with two types of metal and power and food, population morale is a whole different beast. This is determined by a number of things like housing space, birth/death rates, medical coverage, unemployment, etc. As you research more options, so do your population needs increase, so there can be tactical decisions to not research improvements so your morale stays a bit lower, but more stable. Morale in the game has a long tail - that is to say, decisions you make early on can have knock-on effects down the line, and since morale determines everything from building and research speed to birth rates, things can easily snowball if you're not careful. All in all, there's a surprising amount of tightrope-walking and operating under a timer, especially when the game decides to throw a curveball or two at you with disasters, or if the other colony starts to get antsy and finds you a good target. If it's your thing though, it facilitates some very satisfying under-the-wire moments, like completing the last structure kit you need to roll out your convoy towards a backup base as your old camp begins to succumb to lava.

Great colony management & RTS game

I never played the original Outpost 1. But this game has a great feel to it and has a special place in my gaming library. The research portion to gain access to additional technologies is overwhelming without a guide or experience. The colony management and launching colonists into space is gratifying. The RTS portion is interesting, but could use some modern tweaks. Overall, this is a fun game I with a text-based story that happens between missions.

A rough gem

One of the best survival city builders in history. It's a must play for anybody who's into this kind of games. It has an actual story with great writing. The campaing has some pacing issues. The gameplay loop is very addictive and also has some pacing issues (It's very slow then very hectic). It feels like a few adjustments (mostly ui) short of absolut legend status.

A fan since '97

I've played this since it came out. It's a charming blend of city (colony) builder and RTS with a very nice novella underneath by J. Steven York. Would recommend to anyone looking for a mid-90's hidden gem of an RTS.
