A lot of effort put into this game!
I remember playing this game many many years ago (demo only), and have only just finished it now! Outlaws is an old school FPS gem. Good storytelling and fast-paced. Graphics & Audio - Nails the Western style. Hand-drawn cutscenes and soundtrack are fantastic. Voice overs and sound effects are spot on. (I did run the nglide_config.exe from the install folder and set the resolution higher which I recommend.). Graphics are obviously very low texture but that didn't seem to hinder enjoyment, if anything, if was more relaxing having the visual simplicity. Gameplay - Classic FPS action. Six-shooters, shotguns, rifles, and dynamite to tackle a range of enemies and puzzles (though it wasn't until near the end I learned it was the quick fire key to light the dynamite lol). The level design is good, though I did have to YouTube some walkthroughs on occasion when I got stuck, unsure what to do, though that wasn't often, I did find myself going around in circles quite a few times, but that was my fault for being impatient and not looking around carefully for keys. Enemy AI is evil in it's unpredictability at times, and not every shot at an enemy seems to make contact, which is great combat genuinely challenging and fun, though I did abuse the game save feature throughout!. What I would have expected to be a cursing and rage quit situation many times was actually very relaxed and fun due to saving often. Story - Good for a 90s FPS. You play as retired U.S. Marshal James Anderson, seeking revenge after a gang murders his wife and kidnaps his daughter. The cutscenes are nicely done. Conclusion.. A piece of FPS history and despite the old-school visuals, lots of fun to play. LucasArts put some quality effort into this and it shows. (When you do complete the game, stick around through the end credits for the quotes at the end. They clearly has a good sense of humour with the quotes. Very surprise to see John De Lancie as one of the voices, which is cool.)
