An exercise in frustration.
The first game was waaay better. While I can appreciate another avoidance game, more often than not you will keep dying repeatedly in one section or a chase scene. This completely ruined the immersion for me such that the game wasn't really scary at all. There's plenty of gore, but you've seen it all before in other horror games. The one extreme scene which got the game initially banned from rating in Australia doesn't even seem to be in the game anymore. Unless you read every single scrap of paper you find in the game the ending will likely not make much sense. You'll see shovels, boards, all manner of potential weapons to use to knock at least one isolated foe down - but you can't touch any. You can only operate your highly technical 1080p camera. Many of the outdoor areas you're in have so much brush that along with darkness you're trying to move through obstacles you cannot see at times. In one particular chase scene after racing down some stairs to move a cupboard to get away, I watched one of the baddies defy game physics and drop right through solid stairs to the spot right in front of me and proceeded to thwack me. Go for the first Outlast and the DLC, much better experience. This game only seems to make people angry including me. Dying over and over and over is just a burglar for feeling any kind of immersive fear.
