Outlast

The story is intriguing, in fact I wish it was presented in novel form. I won't go into more detail, just know that the story is an easy 5/5 stars. The game itself is not particularly scary. The atmosphere is spooky in the beginning, but you get used to it quickly. Still: - Sound design is excellent - Graphics are excellent as well, great play with lighting, shadows, and colors Gameplay gets boring before you can say chips: - The "puzzles" are silly - There's an absurd amount of back and forth, it gets annoying fast - Enemies are predictable - Platforming doesn't get any less frustrating the more you play; platforming is generally bad in first person perspective games The gameplay part of the game is 2/5. The fantastic story doesn't make the game fun to play, games are called games because they are played first and foremost. Still, I do recommend it to horror fans.

The best part about this game is that so many people are posting let's plays of this on YouTube. The game is so inherently terrifying that the screams are delightful. I myself can't play horror games due to being too much of a coward, but watching others play it was great and the story is excellent. Definitely worth playing if you can play horror. Also worth a Let's Play watch, definitely one of the most scary and professional horror games to date.

I enjoyed this. Not as good as Penumbra/Amnesia/Soma, but satisfying a similar itch for much of it. You'll know when you're in the mood for this kind of game. Inevitably some parts are cliched and you've seen them before. There are a lot of quests to "find the three fuses/keycards, each of which is down one of the three dead ends with a monster" or "activate this pump but to do it you need to pull three other levers while a monster patrols". The batteries run out ridiculously quick (and what videocamera uses a single AA battery?). The biggest issue for me is that in low-light environments even a single LED stands out. In this game you are surrounded by killers who are used to being in the dark and have pretty good vision - yet you can be two feet away from them, watching through the camera's display panel with your face lit up by the glow, and the hunters don't notice you or the light. That's plain silly. If not for those issues I would have given it five stars. It's (mostly) professionally done vulnerable horror.

I want to be as concise as possible with this review. People will say that the game is linear. It's not open world nor does it need to be. There is a correct way to go and an incorrect way to go, a complaint that I hear frequently. Again, yes; it's not open world, and again, it doesn't need to be. It tells a story that invokes genuine fear and tension despite its simplistic and generic story. While not the most convoluted story, it's effective at setting the background for an effective horror experience because it's not the story that creates fear but the journey and this is where the game shines. Unlike it's successor, it has the best balance of chase scenes with periods where you encounter nobody and the environment is what creates the fear. This is one of my favorites in the genre and is memorable experience.
