Nice, but inconsistent (Spoiler-free)
Overrall thought: It begins with a nice atmosphere build and nice scares, gets repetitive by the middle, and goes totally bonkers by the end. Story: Pretty interesting, but many of is written on documents, that most players ignore. And -in my opinion- you can predict the ending miles before it arrives. Game Mechanics: You use your camera to see in the dark (it requires batteries for this), solve extremely simple 'puzzles', and runaway and hide from enemies. It's fun an gets your heart racing, but it gets repetitive at the middle of the game, and as a side note, bateries are way too abundant. Graphics/Sound: It uses the Unreal Engine 3, it looks very detailed, but the character models could have been better. The sound is amazing, and very chilling. So, like I said, you'll have a nice and creepy time playing Outlast, but its inconsistencies show themselves throughout the game, and might take you out of the experience.

This one WILL make you its bitch
No messing around in this one, kids! Your trip to Mount Massive Asylum will literally have you knee-deep in the dead pretty much from the get-go. And compared to the grotesque horrors to come, that‘s pretty much the G-rated part of the game... Red Barrels‘ creation needs to be applauded for its appalingness. Yes, there are cheap jump scares, but they‘re nowhere near as tiresome as, say, Doom 3. Instead, picture nerve-wracking, cold-sweat-inducing moments spent running and hiding from hideous cyborg-mutant-rapists (you read that right!). Nothing I‘ve played recently can quite compare with the adrenaline rush of outsmarting the asylum‘s terrifying inhabitants. Even though the game takes place solely in the asylum, there's some variety to the locations and they never feel as nondescript and boring as you might fear. The brisk pace also makes sure that none of the locations ever overstay their welcome. On the downside, the (sparse) readables are a bit lacking and the conclusion felt somewhat unsatisfying. Still, you‘re in for quite a ride. It‘s not the longest game in history. But believe me when I say that it‘s one of the most intense! The near complete lack of bonus content is regrettable, but being able to get this DRM-free makes up for that. Horrific and highly recommended! Suck it down!

Scary...to some point
I just finished "Outlast" and could say that it's a good game and I recommend it to every survival horror fans. Narrow corridors, tense atmosphere and it's a game I would like to play again after some time. I liked the style to use night vision mode of a camera to survive in the dark and I recommend to play it on "Nightmare" difficulty as it's more tense and adds a drama into it. Graphics are on a good level and also level design is ok. Lightning is also very well done. What I did not like so much is that after some time you can learn the behavior of your enemies after some time and you can predict some of their moves, but that is neat picky as there are some good variations of enemies throughout the game. Story is weaker, but it's something I never heard of before, so at least this compensates a bit. Also a "hide & seek" game is sometimes very awkward as for an example when you hide behind the open door and crouching in the corner, the enemies have some kind of invisible "circle" around them which makes them sensitive to your presence and behaves like they can see you right next to them...forgetting the object between you and enemy and catch you, even when they didn't know you are there. I was also more scared form a game "Alien: Isolation" --> Behavior of the Alien was mostly unpredictable and sound was more accurate about creature whereabouts. "Outlast" miss this a lot. Now my personnel disadvantage is that "Outlast" focuses mainly on jump scares. I prefer thick and tense atmosphere of the story with ambient music OR sounds without music at all in background. As I mentioned, try "Alien: Isolation" - For it's awesome Alien AI and ambient sounds in the background, "Dead Space" - For it's story, "The Suffering" - Highly recommended! Tense and thick atmosphere, brilliant and original story, "Amnesia: The Dark Descent" - Atmosphere, originality, etc... All-in-all this is a good game for more playthroughs and I recommend it. _>>EnJoY<<_
