Outcast – Second Contact is the complete remake of the cult title Outcast. As the first 3D open world in the history of video games and pioneer in the modern action-adventure genre, the 1999 release won over 100 awards including adventure game of the year.
The Outcast universe completely redone with modern graphics.
Combat even more dynamic with new moves: dodges, rolls, sprint and cover system.
New hidden areas divulging some of the most hotly debated mysteries of Adelpha by the fans of the original game.
Getting stuck in introduction level between small bushes and forest area behind river.. cant get out with that quirky movement, cant jump out nothing.. cant load older save. As a level designer my self i cant tolerate such a design flaw in fist introduction level. Like someone cant fix bad collision zones and terrain slopes...
I have to restart now and i have lost 30 mins of my little free time which i have.
I never played the original, so I´m unbiased.
The game ain´t that bad, but the combat is so janky that I couldn´t be bothered to keep playing. Also, why is there no infinite sprinting when not in combat?
The story feels like it goes nowhere after the prologue and there is no real incentive to continue afterwards. Overall, the story isn´t that interesting and I find many things about the world and story weird and out of place. I can´t empathize with ugly aliens that talk funny.
Bluntly put, DON'T BUY THIS - the Outcast 1.1 release is superior in every way. Don't believe in the lies about added content (read: a useless room with an Outcast symbol in it, woohoo). It's a terrible, rushed Unity port that the devs didn't try to patch at all. It runs slow as hell too - the most common Unity trait.
Here how it will run on your AMD-ATI laptop: you complete the tutorial village sequence (i.e. five minutes of content), you enter the portal and the game will crash. It has been like that for years, so don't expect it to change. What should happen is you get teleported into the other world and appear underwater in a pond. It does work on Intel-based laptops w/ Intel Graphics stuff, though. Again, get the Outcast 1.1 instead that had devs behind that actually cared. The game content is IDENTICAL, meaning you'll be taking in a ton of extra negatives by picking the Second Contact release for no gain.
If you really want a more recent Outcast release, download the fan game Legacy of the Yods (2017) that practically tries to be Outcast 2 and allegedly has fully-vocalized cast. Probably works better, too, than Second Contact. You HAVE OPTIONS and no excuse.
BTW, a ton of barely-sensical shill reviews with this one. You have to wonder how a game that does not even work on a big chunk of the targeted systems, is somehow 4/5 .
It is absolutely the same game just with a better graphics and faster shooting guns which makes game easier.
I mean in 1999 this was a masterpiece. There were not so many games with full 3D and open world with a lot of NPCs. At that time games were made not for making money but for "fun". You did not expect from the game loads of features, just a 20 to 30 hours of interesting gameplay.
Today we expect more from the game but second contact is just the same game, even a little bit easier. I would absolutely approve it if there will be DLC that would extend story line but at the moment guys just took unreal engine and redesigned levels and models. Put the same story line, same items placement, same issues, same controls. Even old audio samples and movie scenes were used. And selling that as a 35 euro game is a bit too rude. I mean, you did not need game designer, level designer, actors, artists - all that was taken (copypasted even without proper quality improvements) from main game so you did not spend money there. While we have 39 euro games like Original Sin and Original Sin 2 which required way more efforts and people to get completed.
I would not recommend it now unless there will be some reasonable DLCs. At the moment just play old Outcast with graphic mods to get almost the same game or even better.
This game is unplayable. Even something as basic as jumping is pretty much broken. 50% of the time when you hit space to lunge you will just drop straight to the ground. Feels like controlling someone who is partially paralyzed. Do not waste your time and money.
