As part of a covert experiment, the US military deployed a probe designed to prove the existence of a parallel universe hidden from our own. Although the probe successfully entered the alternate universe and reached a planet called Adelpha, its first crucial data transmission is mysteriously cut short.
The probe's unexpected demise triggers a disastrous chain of events resulting in the creation of a black hole, one that threatens to destroy the Earth. Unless the missing probe can somehow be found and repaired, planet Earth itself is doomed.
Vast and diverse continents to explore, inhabited by thousands of living creatures
An excellent mix of action and adventure, well-designed combat and complete freedom of movement
One of the best games of 1999 with a memorable and believable storyline set in the not-so-distant future

Outcast is not only one of the greatest Action-Adventures it is simply one of the greatest games ever. Period.
There are very few games that create a convincing but totally alien world which you will get to know and love. It may feel (and look) strange but once you get into the game you will be hooked.
Combine this with an incredible musical score and excellent voice acting and you've got a game that should be in every hall of fame.
I hadn't logged in to GOG.com for quite a while when I stumbled upon this classic - added it to my most wanted games but never expected it to actually turn up!
I've played a lot of games over the years but my first experience of Outcast still ranks up there with Shenmue 2 as one of the best. It has a smart sci-fi story, a great lead in Cutter Slade and the scale of the graphics is still impressive to this day. The use of voxels to create vast, organic-looking landscapes never really caught on in gaming but that just makes Outcast all the most unique - and just look at the ripples when you jump into water!
Basic gameplay is a third-person action/adventure and while the shooting probably seems quite basic by todays standards the range of weapons is decent and all can be upgraded for some enjoyable pyrotechnics. But its the structure of the game that is most compelling, as you move from area to area, gaining the trust of the local populace in order to weaken the infrastructure of the enemy - targeting their food stocks first, etc so that you can whittle down the resistance before taking on the main stronghold. The range of quests makes it more akin to an RPG and there are always a ton of sidequests to keep you entertained.
The story borrows liberally from elements of Stargate, with portals that transport you from place to place, but the plot is actually quite strong and I have to admit I teared up a little at the ending. A sequel to the game was officially cancelled a few years ago so we'll never know what happened in the continuing adventures of Cutter Slade.
BUY IT NOW! And listen to the swell of that brilliant Moscow Symphony Orchestra soundtrack!
The atmosphere, world building, and music are all amazing. The voxel based graphics give it a surreal quality that I appreciate.
Actually playing it is miserable. It felt like one fetch quest after another, after another, after another, after another...it just didn't end.
Outcast is a classic. Its one of the best games ever made. When it came out, there was nothing else like it, and still... there is nothing quite like it.
It is a nearly perfect game and I can think of only one real flaw: Jan's Test of Sneaking. I hate Jan's Test of Sneaking, and you will to.
But everything else is pitch perfect.
A lot of people have already written about the game itself. I just wanted to add that the folks at Fresh 3d have done an awesome job reengineering the game for version 1.1. The game runs smoothly in 1080p, and is a joy to play on the xbox gamepad. A perfect excuse to get back into this fantastic gem from the past!
