As part of a covert experiment, the US military deployed a probe designed to prove the existence of a parallel universe hidden from our own. Although the probe successfully entered the alternate universe and reached a planet called Adelpha, its first crucial data transmission is mysteriously cut short.
The probe's unexpected demise triggers a disastrous chain of events resulting in the creation of a black hole, one that threatens to destroy the Earth. Unless the missing probe can somehow be found and repaired, planet Earth itself is doomed.
Vast and diverse continents to explore, inhabited by thousands of living creatures
An excellent mix of action and adventure, well-designed combat and complete freedom of movement
One of the best games of 1999 with a memorable and believable storyline set in the not-so-distant future

Anyone who likes innovative games with unique universe, good story and atmosphere - should buy this one. I played it for the first time last year, so I have objective and fresh opinion, which is not based on 10-15 rose-tinted memories. Considering how old it is, it really stands out among its contemporaries. The world in which you find yourself is very alien - and that feeling is conveyed very precisely. The npc's are very human-like, yet their culture is quite different from ours. You get involved in solving their problems, you learn about their beliefs and all this contributes to making the game a living world. Certainly sometimes it is difficult to find a certain npc and finish their related quests, but this should not be a reason to abandon the game. The graphics seem a little bit strange, sharp and as far as I remember - a little bit behind the standards of its time, but this doesn't matter very much. The world is shaped beautifully and varies from map to map. I strongly recommend searching forums on how to make enemies stronger and player weapons weaker, as the game is dis-balanced in that regard. There are a number of very interesting items which allow for different type of game play. You also get to ride and fight on a horse-like creature which adds speed and some definite pleasure in the whole thing. Last, but not least - this was one of the best stories in a pc game I personally enjoyed, and I still remember some scenes vividly. This game reminds me in its general feeling a little bit of Omikron. Most people who liked Omikron will like this one a lot.
In 1999, this game knew everything that makes the newest Bioware RPG-s a hit: it had a huge world, you could collect resources, have long, dramatic and funny dialogues in a cinematic quality, you could upgrade your weapons, complete quests and so on... and it was never called an "RPG".
The story and the characters are superb and it is possible that Outcast has the finest screenplay in gaming history. The protagonist is a military guy, but far from an average one, his lines are hilarious, and how he deals with the problems, is just exciting and right. As for the storyline - it has the most clever twists and turns involving the clichéd "hero from prophecies versus evil emperor" that is so well explained with a science-fiction twist that it literally took my breath away. And suddenly it wasn't a cliché anymore, it was a mindblowing way of world-building. Only comparable to the best novels in SF&F, Outcast shows that games can be as good as movies and books. We can relate to this world as well to the protagonist, we can feel the pain of the talan, and this great motivation makes this game unforgettable. Only graphics are outdated - art direction, music and gameplay remained first class, even if we compare to recent games. It's a real shame that their developers went bankrupt.
Outcast is one of the best games in the universe, and I would recommend to every game developer to see what can be achieved.
I remember when i played this game years ago, and how I was stunned not only by visuals, which preserved their quality even up today (!), not only by magnificent music by Lennie Moore and wonderful dubbing (Did you know that french voice of Ulukai is Bruce Willis?), not only by SUPERB and in many aspects unsurpassed AI up to this day (!!), but mainly by atmosphere and story, which are so thick and dense, that you will be in awe. Yes, even you, modern gamer. Action and exploration have NEVER been combined into such a powerful symbiosis.
Its everything: drama, action, espionage, mystic, scifi - on monumental scale - All you could ever dream about!
The main motif of this game is nothing smaller then to free alien planet from tyrannt. There are 5 islands on this planet, each with dramatically different climate - one is snowy, another is desert, jungle and so on - environment is changing often, and it doesn´t give you a slightest chance to be bored.
Just wait when you will, for example, see majestic ancient creature Gorgor, about twenty times bigger than you - but its not only about seeing it, the game cleverly prepares you to this encounter by countless legends which you will hear from common people. Its not just - Baf! Here is monster! - Everything in this game make sense on the deepest level.
But what is The most immpresive about this game is how you make impact on your surroundings by your heroic deeds. You think Fable made it too? Well, in compare to OUTCAST its mere childish attempt on the basic level. I´ll give you brief example what you are about to experience - because - you just must play this - no matter you are 5, 10, 20, or 50 years old - you just must.
As you destroy tyrants´s troops and suppress his power, common folks get stronger, as they have more spare food. They believe you more, and you are more and more a hero to them - or better said, Ulukai, Messiah. At the beginning of the game, they are just scared and fully accept the will of tyrant, they dont believe you to be the chosen, Ulukai. But when they see how you boldly stand against him and killed many of his troops, they gradually get bolder themselves - they are excercising on the fields to be stronger, helping you more. And finally, they love you as you were one of their race - it´ll make you cry.
It goes to the extent that they sabotage food rations for the tyrannts soldiers, so they are weaker and easier to kill. And those are just few examples of this tremendously deep game. The World lives, there are numerous ancient legends, which are just plain fun to listen to, every single worker on the rice field has something interesting to tell you.
There are million little details - for example - you can ride an alien animal called Twonha - but of course it is not that easy, you must first tame him. And there are numerous side quests, which actually matters, and have some effect on the main story. You will realize something magnificent - you will not be doing them to get some Bad-Ass gun and some silly XP points (nonexistant in this game ofcourse), but just because you want help those poor folks.
The World changes as you progress through the game - you see it everywhere! Nowadays, every developer says exactly the same thing - that your actions affects world blah blah - THE ONLY game where I´ve seen it done is OUTCAST!
Well. That´s it, I´ve said what have must been said. I could continuo for hours.
To make it short: The Best Game. The Perfect Experience. The Flawless Storytelling.
The day when they cancelled OUTCAST 2 was sad day for all gaming community. And what´s worse - nobody even noticed, because OUTCAST for some reason wasn´t instant hit and was more or less forgot.
Go and play it. Six dollars for this gem is like to pay 20 bucks for eternal paradise.
A true classic must have a good history, good music, better graphics and excellent gameplay.
This game have all of this and more. The atmosphere, the voice acting, the landscapes of Adelpha, all is simply beautiful.
Despite you are the typical yankee saving the world, the history involves you like never before.
The soundtranck is for me, one of the best of all time. Every piece fits perfect for every situatuin.
And still is one of my favourites. Thanks Appeal for this game and thanks Lenny Moore for the enjoyable music.
This game is a third person action game, with open world and rpg elements. The graphics and the gamplay are astonishing for the year it came out and despite that it holds up pretty decently. The animations and the combat sistem feel dated, but they are not entirely awful. The open world is nicely done and the rpg elements consist on lots of sidequests, invetory and money. The story is reminiscent of Stargate, and the influence of the movie is all around the game, even in its soundtrack.
