Description
Outcast 1.1 has been recompiled from the original source code and improved to run smoothly on today's computers. The main improvements compared to the original version are: multithreaded voxel renderer for higher performances, software bilinear filtering on polygonal meshes, part of the HUD redesigned to match higher resolutions, new high-resolution sky paintings, new launcher, native support of xbox gamepad, user-friendly controller configuration, a lot of bugs fixed and improved stability.

Please note: Outcast Classic remains available for download as a bonus goodie.

As part of a covert experiment, the US military deployed a probe designed to prove the existence of a parallel universe hidden from our own. Although the probe successfully entered the alternate universe and reached a planet called Adelpha, its first crucial data transmission is mysteriously cut short.

The probe's unexpected demise triggers a disastrous chain of events resulting in the creation of a black hole, one that threatens to destroy the Earth. Unless the missing probe can somehow be found and repaired, planet Earth itself is doomed.
  • Vast and diverse continents to explore, inhabited by thousands of living creatures
  • An excellent mix of action and adventure, well-designed combat and complete freedom of movement
  • One of the best games of 1999 with a memorable and believable storyline set in the not-so-distant future

Great atmosphere

I bought Outcast back when it was launched because of the high ratings in game magazines. At first i thought the game was pretty weird but it had amazing graphics for that time and the gameplay was also unique. After a while you get familiar with the great atmosphere Outcast has and you start enjoying your quests and face weird enemies. It's sad Outcast has only been bought by a few people when it launched. I remember they were developing Outcast 2 but sadly had to quit making it because there was no money. At least we can still play Outcast !

What can you wish for an adventure?

Absolute freedom in an open ended world? Check. Original sci-fi story that keeps you hooked up until the end? Check. Astonishingly beautiful, almost real worlds?... Much praise could've been written here: about the game's innovative voxel graphic engine, amazing orchestral soundtrack, various unique game features - but it is so much better to just see it yourself!

Pretty darn good

I started playing this game about a week ago, and I have to say , it holds up pretty well to todays standards. The graphics are obviously a big issue for any game beyond a certain age, but with the widescreen patch and ini tweaks from the gog forums it easily beats all games from its era and a fair few which came later. Those voxels do a pretty good job. The mechanics are pretty awesome with lots of things you can do, an open world with side quests and a lot of genuine freedom. That being said freedom is an issue. There's little in the way of explanation and while the tutorial does the basics theres a lot you need to figure out for yourself. I suspect its the old school design philosophy of letting you work things out for yourself and I'm just too used to modern games holding your hand. But is it too much to ask for a labelled map? Or at least a map you can label yourself? You can set up teleports across the game, but then have to rely on remembering which teleport leads where (via shapes on the teleport item in your inventory). I suppose I should be able to, but after multiple trips across different "worlds" its easy to get mixed up. Similarly the Gamesaav is a nice fourth wall breaking touch, but it would be far faster and more convenient to just make a save menu item. The story and plot are... decent. A well realised world with empathetical characters do well to drive you through a generic tale of wormhole takes you to a random place and you need to find your way back. All in all a good game even by todays standards but I do think it could learn a few lessons from how gaming has evolved.

Adventure of all adventures

Playing Outcast I felt like finding the world I was looking for all my life. Believable NPC's, funny and demanding adversaries, engrossing quests and hilarious Cutter Slade (main character). I play Outcast now and again and it is never waisted time.

Round when all others were slab sided

I played this game initially when it was released. LOVED IT! In a time when 98% of game creators were jumping on polygons, this game went Voxel. So a round wheel appears round and rolls smoothly. That was one thing I never appreciated with polygons of that period: round wheels were n-sided polygons but the wheel STILL rolled smoothly and not at all what one would expect from the visual presentation. And the soundtrack is quite amazing. Now I can listen without firing up the game. I've kept an old Win ME system just to play this game occasionally so I'm really excited to give GOG's version a go on my Win 7 system. Now perhaps I'll make the old system pure Linux.
