Tight platformer, mostly good gameplay

The extremely tight controls and platforming mechanics the game's main selling point. Few games manage to make the controls as responsive as Ori does, while having a ton of different movement mechanics in a maze of twisty challenges. Even the character animations feel fitting for whatever you do on the controller. Art and music are excellent. Level design is largely good. There's some amount of backtracking which is often kept interesting enough to be unnoticeable. There was one area I didn't like. The escape sequences and boss fights are the game's weakest points, particularly two of the late game ones where you cannot save in the middle. Play if you want a platformer game with an an occasionally challenging gauntlet, lots of secrets and metroidvania style progression.

Love & hate

Love: music, art, chars Hate: controls, redesign of the game You remember Super Metroid 3 for SNES? Then you will love Ori. However, in some cases the controls do not work as thought. I must climb and use the feather with the same key. So, in 9 of 10 jumps everything works fine with the SHIFT key but the... last jump. NOPE! You are dead. Did not use feather after I did not climb... In some cases, it is ugly that u cannot save the game if you have no energy left. And usually there is not that much energy to collect in exceedingly difficult and long passages. In addition, if you for example know the "let’s play" by D**mtend*, you recognize that some items in the beginning have been replaced by experience. So, I have only 5 life cells while he has almost ten. At some points, the weak interpreter for the controls really crushes the game. Even if you are happy, that you made it after a while it is way to frustrating. Thus, I give four stars, but I do not regret that I bought this game.

Badly balanced experience

I'm not quite long in the game but if the rest is like this I won't be playing much of it. The game seems terribly unbalanced with sequences requiring die-and-retry without much room for skill. You want a well-balanced, challenging platforming experience through a nicely designed gameplay and universe? Try Hollow Knight. From what I've seen Ori doesn't have much more to give than this, except annoying gameplay and "shinier" graphics (they're good indeed but they don't serve the readability either).

Great plateformer

Forget the blahblah metroivania/whatever they call it. This is a (quite hard) platformer with your character gaining some moves as skills, that you'll learn to use in the next zone. That's no metroidvania in my book, like Hollow Knight is. Anyway, it is superb (visuals, animations & music!), the save system is interesting and definitly not an issue (I was never remotely in a situation where I was lacking energy to save before or after a tricky section, lots of locations where to pick up energy.HP bonus anyway which even respawn). Let me say it again: it is a HARD game, the difficulty being from the platform aspect of the game, not the fights that are mostly here to make you gain energy/HP or help you gain access to another area (using skills on enemies to jump higher, for example). I liked it a lot, I raged a lot on the final escape sequence (more than 30 attempts, I think), but hey, I signed for it, 'cause it NOT AN EASY GAME :)
