Abe is a first class Mudokon floor-waxer for RuptureFarms. He was catapulted into a life of adventure when he overheard plans by his boss to turn all the Mudokons into Tasty Treats as part of a last-ditch in Molluck the Glukkon's meat-packing empire.
During his escape from RuptureFarms, Abe received a vision from the mysterious Big Face, showing Abe that he must not only rescue his fellow Mudokons, but also protect all of Oddworld's creatures from the predatory Magog Cartel.
Enter Oddworld's surreal sensory overload of pure gaming and claim your destiny. Saviour or salami? You decide.
Abe's Oddysee is a tough but fair game, it's more a puzzle game than a platformer but if you can master its areas and get over some of the dated feel you'll be left with a pretty satisfying game that has arguably aged quite well (minus the limitation of being stuck in 640x480 resolution) in terms of world aesthetic (Rupture Farms feels gritty, like a horrible workplace, and its accented well with the slight dark humor; albeit sometimes at the player's expense), soundtrack (suitably industrial feeling), and narrative (you are leading your people to safety (or killing them accidentally)). If you want a more modern take on the game, give New n' Tasty a try (just know it substantially amps up the number of Mudokons in the game) otherwise I recommend giving the R.E.L.I.V.E source port a try since it keeps the game as vanilla as possible (minus the option for fullscreen and image smoothing to reduce some of the pixelation) whilst adding SDL2 support (game lends well to a controller, keyboard experience is a bit clunky).
I played the heck outta this game when it was on PS1. I've never been a fan of the genre, but I played the demo and was hooked. The puzzles were hard, but not impossible, and all very logical. None of that fake difficulty BS where the puzzles are just random garbage you could never figure out without the guide. It's all stuff that you can do if you put your mind to it, and in the rare occation you crack open the walkthrough, you slap yourself for not figuring it out.
Can't wait to replay this one, its been a while!
I bought the game some time ago because never played when it was originally released. The game itself is awesome but requires some patience. Ecery stage is kind of a puzzle that must be solved with some precision or you'll get killed and have to start again which can be frustrating.
It is kind of glitchy in my pc, don't know exactly why, but it freezes sometimes. Besides this and other minor bugs, I would recommend this game.
I am giving it 3 stars because of the glitches, but as I mentioned before, the game is awesome, and without the bugs it deserves 5 stars.
This game is one of the rare games that I have bought on multiple consoles. I am even hunting for the original PC game with the unique box. But I want to emplore anyone to play this game as it was one of the most unique games of its time, mixing both cinematic pre rendered graphics and a unique world into this gem. If you still need some more convincing I emplore you to watch Caddicarus video on oddworld as it should give you a great grasp of this game.
Aside from the point I bought this game solely to have it on a 1gb USB and I did. Now I can play this anywhere I want: The park, Movies, even my boring college classes. I can play this game on my work laptop and still keep it clean. 5/5 and thank you gog support for all clarifications
